I'm thinking of getting this:
http://www.filmtools.com/cleatsuccamm.html

along with this case for my iPhone:
http://snapmountforiphone.com/

You can see the suction cup mount used here (ignore the stuff about the case - they couldn't get enough funding to make it):

The suction cup mount for the GoPro works really well; I used it on the front windshield facing in, then out, then on the back window facing out the other day just trying out different options. In my other cars, I just stuck a flat adhesive mount at the top edge of the windshield though. Worked out great. No give at all.

I just downloaded the app.
if you have your iPhone in a case you dont want to remove or want to be able to use the mount for other things too, the new RAM x-grip rocks. it grips tight a sin i can sling the grip around with my iphone in it as hard as i can and it doenst budge. it clears the camera ndd will fit on any RAM suction mount.

the problem i have with the scosche mount is that its not a real suction cup, its a very flay silicon cup that uses an adhesive disc for a lot of the hold. i much prefer the RAM mounts. id rather trust the iphone and safety to a big thick mount with a suction cut stronger than the go pro at speed.

Is that App only good if the track you are running on is available for it? Just wondering if it'll work for autocrossing?

it will put the numbers on the vid for anything, it will overlay the track outline and show where you are on the road course. the cool part is you can program in any course with a few gps points plotted. very cool app for the money, though i havent had it on the track yet. they postponed my track day until next weekend rather than tomorrow

Seriously though I am thinking the windshield may be the best option for recaro cars Gonna need to run a second camera to get steering/driver shots for picture-in-picture.

Thanks to everybody with replies.

I'm thinking that windshield mounting is going to be the easiest and most convenient in the short term. What would really be ideal would be putting the camera between the drivers seat and passenger seat in some way. It would be great to see what the driver is doing (maybe even see what the gauges read on an HD video), while also being close enough to the windshield to have a good view of the road.

However, I think a roll cage mount would probably have to be required for what I'm really looking for. I saw a video on youtube once that looked really good, and the poster said he made a custom mount, which was supported by both the suit hanger hooks above the rear quarter windows. Sounds promising, but he didn't give any details, and I'd really have to think about it to make one sturdy enough.

I could probably mount it on the back windshield and face it forward, but it would be hard to press record from the drivers seat. its worth a try i guess... I'm uploading that video right now

Using Scosche suction cup windshield mount shooting video from iPhone 4. It seems a little shaky. My engine makes the car shake pretty good, and I think its being amplified by the "snake" adjustable arm on the mount. Its about 6 inches long. Also, my window is open, allowing some road noise.

Any options for grill or under body suspension/wheel shots?
