That close - 302 to GT500
Local dealer called last week and informed me that a new '12 GT500 is in the showroom with my name on it and I should check it out. So I did and with a fair trade for my Boss and a few dollars it would soon be in my garage.
Well, I just got back from the dealer & swapped back for my Boss. The Shelby, altho fast as hell, had no road feel and cornered like a barge. A reviewer nailed it when he described driving the 500 as "feels like I'm sitting on top of the car rather than in it" which now makes perfect sense.
The gadgets were nice as were the leather Recaros but it ended there.
I really wanted to like this car and it's 550hp but after taking it on a good 20 mile run thru some local twisties......my mind was made up & back to the dealer it went.
Funny, I thought the Shelby would be an upgrade.....it was the other way around )

I was thinking the same thing lmao
Also, I was thinking that initial turn in on the GT500 could feel a lot worse due to (I think) a heaver block and also the fact that there is that big ol honking S/C on top of the engine, but in the straightaways the Shelby would negate any gains the Boss made during a turn.

It did feel faster than the Boss...just no fun to drive. Not bashing Shelby's just pointing out that the 11-12's are a one trick pony IMO and there's nothing wrong with that if drag racing is your thing.
I believe that qoute was from a ZL1 - GT500 head to head test. I did get the sensation of sitting higher in the GT...like being on top of the car.

The Boss would be a drivers race against the 07-10 GT500s but they will be staring at the taillights of the 11-13 GT500. Put the GT500 on a small twisty road course with not that big of a straightaway I think the Boss would do better due to a good suspension, lighter weight and a slightly better weight distribution but give the GT500 room to stretch its legs and I think it would win. The GT500 does have a nice suspension from the factory and the motor is superb IMO.
The Boss is one hell of a car and there is no denying that fact.

Not sure why this turned into a "mines bigger than yours" debate. I was just tossing my personal opinion out there concerning the differences between 2 mustangs. I believe if anyone else here had the opportunity to compare as I did the outcome would be similar.
For me, the Boss 302 is a more complete and thought out car that does everything well. The GT500 is a brute that I tried to bond with but it lacked the finesse and feel of the 302.
Having sold my '68 GT500 15 years ago I really wanted to get back into a Shelby but now realize that ain't gonna happen...at least not with this generation of GT's.
Nice cars that get a lot of attention....just not my thing.

I did the same swap, but, I kept the Shelby. I loved the boss, great car to drive and always felt like I was connected to the road in it..the Shelby is a different animal. Much more comfortable,,IMHO,and will scare the pants off of ya if you don't watch it.
The Boss, for me, was just a straight up racer. Always felt like it just wanted to run flat out. The Shelby, to me, is just more refined and laid back. But make no mistake, it will get up and go if you ask it to.
Mine is a 2011, could it use some suspension improvements? Yes, and I plan on taking care of that real soon. I am very happy with my swap.
Hope you are too
