Boss 302 oil cooler question

Boss 302 oil cooler question
Hi folks,
before getting me a Mustang I am doing some research on modifications that might be needed to regularily track a Boss 302.
I have used the search concerning aftermarket oil cooler solutions but did not find a satisfying answer so far.
My question is this:
As I understand it, the Boss 302 does have this oil cooler installed that cools the oil before going into the oil filter using the engine's water coolant circuit: https://performanceparts.ford.com/part/M-6642-MB
Now, if I would plan to add a real air/oil heat exchanger, do I just put the adaptor plates that come with these oil cooler kits on top of that water/oil heat exchanger adapter? Or do I throw out that water/oil heat exchanger and just instsall the air/oil cooler?
Thank you for clarification!
Best regards

Hello again! Long time no read.
I searched quite a long time before posting the beforehand question.
But now, I stumbled upon this thread of someone fitiing an oilcooler on his Boss 302:
https://trackmustangsonline.com/thre...few-pics.6652/
He did some great pictures describing what he did and this one shows that he just bolts the adapter on the water/oil heat exchanger: https://preview.ibb.co/kOyuJa/oilcoo...rwithhoses.jpg
So I guess that is how to do it.
Hope what I found helps others who do have the same question!

Hope that takes care of your oil cooler problem. I just purchased a 2013 boss 302 in April with 1195 miles on . I have about 4900 on it now. Love the car, but I am in MI so winter driving is out of the questionm. I dont have the Laguna Seca and was under the impression that this was the only one that had the oil cooler, is that correct? Maybe you could answer a question for me. Did you or do you have any problems with the mt 82 trans like notchy and not going into 2nd or 3rd smoothly. After researching quite a bit, the general consensus was pretty negative on this trans. Many people changed oil and got good results, others not so much. I called ford and they said their is a TSB or technical service bulletin and it says there is a1-2 synchro tolerance issue. Fortunately I have the 100,000 mile extended mile warranty and it would cover it with a 100 deductible. Some people said that they had to have that done a few times and it isnt the answer. Any thoughts?

There were some bad Mt82's early on, but they aren't as bad as some people would have you believe. I have 75k mile on mine at this point and it is holding up well. A lot of the shifting problems with the MT82 are caused by the remote mounted shifter. Under a load the transmission torques over and becomes misaligned with the shifter resulting in poor shifting. There are a couple of things that you can do to reduce this including installing a transmission mount bushing and replacing the shifter.

Thanks for responding so quickly. I did see that Blowfish bracket you are referring to. Have you used one and does it create more noise? I am sure it causes more vibration but maybe not a big deal. Also, did you ever change your trans. fluid and if so did it make a difference? I'm new to these forums so I am wondering if the info under your post like 2011 candy red gt and the info under that is yours also? thanks

I am running Redline MTL in my transmission. It met the specs for the MT82 before Ford changed them Redline does not currently produce a fluid that meets the new Ford spec for the mT82. My car is no longer under warranty, so that is not an issue for me. The transmission did appear smoother and quieter after the fluid change. I have the second generation MGW shifter without the Blowfish bracket. I put the shifter in before the Blowfish was introduced and it eliminated my shifting issues. I didn't see a need for the extra bracket when it hit the market. Now I think I would just go with the MGW race spec shifter which mounts differently eliminating the need for the Blowfish bracket.
Oh and the signature block at the bottom is what I drive and a list of most of the mods at this point.

Thanks, this great info. I'll look up the MGW race spec shifter. A lot of guys seem to recommend the BG synchromesh fluid, but I doubt if Ford would allow it if they are going to do the work and keep it under warranty. It sounds like ford made a lot of improvemnts since 2011 or so, maybe they are improved synchros also. Thanks again, maybe I'm catching on to using this forum.

Thanks again, I probably wont do anything until spring anyway. I did look at the MGW shifter, that looks like something to consider. Does that eliminate the stock outside linkage? There price was $470 w/o tax. Would you go with the lowest throw 2.625, or standard of 3.000? Thanks again

The MGW shifter is a great help with no NVH. The shorter the throw the better.
RE: the oil cooler topic, I went with Cooltechs Boss package because I didn't want to run around piecing this thing together myself and although it cost a bunch, I knew I had everything I needed to do the install myself and if there was a problem, I could fall back on Cooltech. The install went without incident and the kit works fantastic.
