? about using the GT grille on the BOSS

Hey all...

I've seen the 'Gary Mod', aka, 'drilling out the fogs on our Boss',
but I'd like to go the route that the Boss 302s uses.

It looks like they use the grille from the Mustang GT, (obviously without the lights installed), and then add mesh behind the opening.

Does anyone know if they in fact use the GT grill?

And how hard is it to get the grille seperated from the grill surround?
It looks like it snaps into the surround and might be tough to seperate.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

the Boss grille is different than the GT. The GT has a honeycomb pattern, and of course a different emblem. Don't know about separating parts though.

Yeah, just noticed the honeycomb grille as well.

I can't imagine someone at Ford taking the time to cut the faux lights out of the Boss grille. The plastic seems to hefty to cut.

Does anyone know if someone at Ford is cutting the plastic, or is it premade like that in Ford casting when they're making the the grille for 302s?

Which plastic are you referring to being cut at the factory?

He's referring to the faux headlight delete plastic.

I don't know if they are made that way or not but having seen one of the 2010 302R cars in person with the screen I'd stick with drilling holes in your stock grill. The screen can bend and IMO doesn't look as good as the stock drilled. The S grill probably does flow more air but I doubt it will make that much of a difference.

They are definetly using the Boss grill, but rather than cut up my grill, I was hoping to find a grille with the opening already there.

You might be able to order a 302S grille but it will cost you. BTW I'm the one who originally posted that photo. Just drill out the stock grill and save your money for the larger radiator if you are concerned about your Boss running too hot.

The Boss grille is pretty easy to remove and I have received a recommendation from some inside Ford people that the grille removal has been used during development to increase airflow during high ambient temperature days. (I do not really want to get into the issue of why we should have to do this for our "racecar with a license plate". It is what is is.) Two bolts on either side of the grille need to be removed and then the multiple securing tabs can be individually released to remove the grille.

5 DOT 0 could you help me understand how the mesh is affixed to the rear of the opened-up fog light hole. It looks like small safety-wire ties are used but how is the mesh mechanically held to the plastic grille?

Thanks!

Thanks guys.
After looking into this some more, I think I may just buy another 302 grille, do all of my cutting on that, and keep the original in good condition.

At first I thought I would just see if I could buy a 302s grille already made, but it would probably only come in white or orange and would be expensive.

Or I could order a new one, which would probably be easier to cut since the grille and surround are seperate when shipped.

My guess on the holes shown in the picture; I bet they used a 90 degree drill with a small bit, then wired it with safety wire.

If you do buy a new Boss grill and don't mind, I'd be interested in how much $ the dealer charges.

I tried ordering the grill and the GT grill came. It will not fit. It is too short. Ford will make you buy the black grill and the surrounding piece together. They will not sell separate. The dealer asked just shy of $400 for both pieces. If someone else finds a place to buy just the black boss grill let me know!

I wanted to buy just the black grille part as well, but after removing the surround, which the grille is attached to, it doesn't look like the grille will seperate from the surround easily.

I think that they probably designed clips into the grille, where once pressed into the surround, that grille is not coming out.

Such is the reason I think both peices are sold as one unit.

I believe the grills on all the boss cars are the same. Ford most likely cuts off the back piece then secures the mesh with safety wire on the S cars. There's a thread on this at BMO. The photo I posted came directly from Ford Racing and they use safety wire to secure the mesh. Seriously after seeing the wire mesh in person I'd just drill out the stock grill and be done with it. Spend your money on a proper oil cooler as the larger radiator may not be the answer. See post #104 at the link below.
