You're already looking at $40k for a decently equipped GT.. With a clean sheet design, like this was, they could of gone lighter and kept the price in the same range.

If Chevy made the Camaro with magical pixie dust there would still be a recall on it..

I bet they are using the F150 and it's considerable sales volume / economies of scale to bring the price impact down on the high strength steal and aluminum components. We will see weight decreases in other more main stream cars next (Explorer, Edge and Taurus, etc...), then the low volume Mustang will benefit from these weight saving materials without a major hit to the price tag. I'm sure when Ford said it's reducing the weight of its cars it was talking more long term. It will come, just in the next redesign.

I thought the new camaro was being built on the same platform as the ATS?

If so, a current RWD ATS 3.6L Premium (so basically everything), weighs in at 3629.

Add the 6.2 and all the other bits and pieces and I bet it comes out around the same as the 2015 Mustang.

Why does everyone ASSUME that just because it's a clean slate that it won't gain weight from the previous generation?
If money was no object, I'd say sure. Like I said before "Nothing is free"


Ford had to build and balance a car that spans no less than 3 distinct markets (and their finances), keep future requirements for safety and it's own targets in mind/check, without increasing the cost too much, attracting new buyers, pleasing enthusiasts, and keeping returning customers.
Not an easy job....

Yes, it is. However, most of GM's resources regarding the Alpha platform are currently being diverted towards finishing the ATS coupe and developing V-series cars for the ATS and CTS. I wouldn't be surprised if 6th gen Camaro development, up to this point, was limited to preliminary planning meetings, as GM probably wants to know what Ford is bringing to the table. That said, I suspect that the 6th gen Camaro will be a smidge lighter than the 6th gen Mustang at launch, simply because GM has more applications for Alpha (don't forget, it will underpin every RWD car they make save the Caddy flagship).

As for the Mustang, I wouldn't be surprised if Ford was readying a weight loss regimen for S550 over its life, partially because I suspect S550 will be sticking around for more than one product cycle (at present, its the only RWD passenger car platform Ford has, and no other applications have been confirmed for it yet), and partially because the fact that the 6th gen Camaro will be moving to Alpha isn't a very well kept secret (you know Ford isn't gonna want to let GM have the upper hand for very long).

If you mean over 200lbs difference, then yes.

Camaro SS Coupe - 3935lbs
Camaro SS Verte - 4197lbs
Camaro ZL1 Coupe - 4120lbs
Camaro ZL1 Verte - 4374lbs
Camaro Z28 Coupe - 3820lbs

AND they can still perform.

Of course, that's the current Rubenesque Camaro, which will be replaced in a year or so with a putatively smaller and lighter one based of the Caddy ATS's chassis.

I wonder if these two mortal rivals will meet in the middle, mass wise, or whether the F car will capitalize on a chance to undercut that Stang at weigh in.

I suspect the Challenger will remain the big boy for a while yet.

The rumors about the Gen 6 Camaro are as ridiculous as the S550 Mustang rumors. Let's face it, the gross majority of internet rags have no clue what they're talking about, and publish garbage to get clicks. As with concrete info on the new Mustang, a grain of salt should be used when taking these "reports" into consideration.

The 2014 Corvette is heavier than the 2013, but by most accounts is more satisfying to drive. Weight is unquestionably a factor in performance but it's not the only factor. While I would have preferred to see the car lose a couple hundred pounds, I'll wait until people are actually driving them before declaring the new car a failure. Would I be willing to pay thousands extra so Ford could have replaced more steel with aluminum? I spent as much as I could afford on my 2011, so no, I wouldn't be happy if the weight went down but the price went appreciably higher.

I onced weighed 200 lbs, i now weigh 150 lbs. The Mustangs weight gain doesn't look so bad now

I wish everyone would shut up until real world performance numbers are obtained. For all we know it will be much faster then the S197 on the track (road course or strip).

If it's shown to be slower then ya'll can start complaining.

It's nice that everyone wants a lighter car, and I'm sure so would Ford.
But there are so many factors in play here.


Some people are acting like Ford kicked their kittens while pouring sugar in their gas tank and lighting a flaming bag of dog crap on their porch for not making it lighter.


I'm not defending or getting upset over the weight gain, I'm just being realistic.


I'm sure people had the same thoughts as the size and weight crept up over the years, we just didn't have the internet around to see all the wonderfully coloured comments from people about it

The added weight doesn't bother me. I still can't get over how ugly the car is. All of the wheel options are awful looking as well. Oh well, not like I was gonna buy one anyways. Just disappointed that it's not something I can get excited about.

Like many I would have loved to see a 200lbs lighter stang. But this isn't so bad. One stat you won't find but is surly better is unsprung weight. I bet that droped a lot and that is weight you do feel when driving.

I am not happy with any weight gain. I hope the Ford engineers find a way to put the Mustang on a diet. If it has a two piece driveshaft, I hope they find a way to replace it with an aluminum single driveshaft. Maybe they can find other ways to nock of another 30 pounds.
