I bought a new Mustang in 1976 called a 'MPG'. Maybe that would be a good name to bring back.

personally I think the P51 name is a great idea for the baddest of the bad.
wasnt there a Saleen or some other mustang tuner out there that had a P51 trim level

Cubic inch is never spot on with liters. Like the Ford 302 and GM 305 are both called 5.0s... so 329=5.4

Mustang Falcon?
Mustang VI (whatever the current gen is)

My though would be it will be "global", i.e. European.

I dont think you would get much lighter with that scenario, maybe 100 pounds since your ditching the supercharger hardware and that allows you to go to a tubular exhaust manifold (those cast iron manifolds are there for longevity's sake since the exhaust gasses are considerably higher in temp compared to an NA engine). Otherwise Ford would need to employ other weight saving materials like a titanium exhuast, carbon fiber where it could, decontenting and so on. There could be some weight savings with your theoretical VVT heads as they would need to be a clean sheet design. All of which would add considerable cost (most likely equal to or more epxensive than the GT500), with all of that you'd probably be in the realm of a GT or Boss

This 500hp NA Mustang then runs into the next problem since it would be equal to or more expensive than a GT500 (since its essentially a GT500 sans blower) and at that price point it needs to equal or better the GT500 in performance. Handling would surely improve (would have to most likely be on par with the Boss LS if not better) but it would also need to exceed the capability of the GT500's 650hp engine in at least acceleration and possibly top speed. All of which is a mighty order indeed.

This is essentially the problem that the F5 Z/28 guys dont seem to see with a theoretical LS7 powered Camaro. One where the added cost doesn't justify the minimal increase in performance where it counts (on the spec sheet in a magazine) making it hard to market such a car to anybody other than the hardcore enthusiast.

I like the idea of a naturally aspirated TiVCT 5.4 since the current GT500 engine features a bore (iirc) slightly larger than the 5.0 which theoretically would allow for an equal to or better flow numbers in comparison. Piston speed is a concern still with the 5.4 (at 7k Ford has said piston speeds are in the realm of an Formula 1 car) but I think this would make a dandy engine for a car focused on drag racing.
GT should stay. Not only has it been around since the first year it dates well before that and actually means something.

I was being facetious about the GT moniker since I find it funny that people consider the GT500 name to be stale already.

I'm surprised the terminator crowd hasn't been in here bombing the thread with the Cobra name.

Personally I always thought it was odd to combine "Mustang" with another animal (ie: Mustang Cobra. Wha...?) but maybe Ford could make better use of equine-inspired monikers.

Mustang Colt (V6?)
Mustang Thoroughbred (V8?)
Mustang Stallion (SVT?)
etc.

I'll concede that some of those have been used in unofficial/semi-official variants in the past, but I think it'd be great for Ford to really embrace them if they wanted to go with something that breaks from the current status quo and "official" tradition.

If Ford kept "GT", I'd like to see it actually mean something other than simply being the "V8 Mustang". In other words, let the "GT" be a handling/performance package that can be applied to basic V8 Mustangs, as in the '60s.

Yeah, I fudged the math a touch because 329 sounds better IMO. And like everybody else has said, automakers round up or down all the time to find a 'neat' number to put on the badge.

Also, P51 is a great idea I think. I hadn't thought of that, but I like it.

Im thinking it has to have mustang in it do you don't lose the identity of the car. Soooo how about:
Mustang S6 = sport 6 cyl
Mustang S8 = sport 8 cyl
Mustang P8 = performance 8 cyl

I know, I know nevermind, sounds too European.
