If the new Mustang will be a thoroughly modern rede ruin of Mustang style, then the new top of the heap Mustang needs a new name. Boss has come and gone, neatly putting a end to that storied chapter. Shelby and GT500 are fine in their own right but a ZL1 humiliating, worldly Mustang needs a new name for the top dog model.

Terminator? At least we could consider making it official.

Thoughts, suggestions? Nothing used "officially" before.

My personal opinion, SVT and Cobra should make a comeback, maybe not as the top dog - er - top pony, (Shoot me for saying it, but I'm actually thinking 4cylinder turbo for the SVT model).

Other than that, maybe King Cobra as the baddest stang? Or another Mach 1.

Terminator is a cool name, but I almost guarantee it's copy-written by whoever made the movies, and so is off the table as an official name.

I think we'll have to see the official concepts and stuff before we can decide what to call it.

EDIT: Another thought that just came to my mind that would be cool I think would be a BOSS 329 (329 CU = 5.4 Liters)
I envision this as an all aluminium, dual VVT naturally aspirated version of the GT500 engine with independent throttle bodies and velocity stacks leading to a high rise intake manifold, tuned for throttle response and high RPM. With power output in the 500 bhp area. The car would be much lighter than the current GT500, with handling made a priority.

Oh here we go again... How about dropping the stale "GT" moniker as well. Its only been used since 1964 (with a brief hiatus from 70-78).

I dont think you would get much lighter with that scenario, maybe 100 pounds since your ditching the supercharger hardware and that allows you to go to a tubular exhaust manifold (those cast iron manifolds are there for longevity's sake since the exhaust gasses are considerably higher in temp compared to an NA engine). Otherwise Ford would need to employ other weight saving materials like a titanium exhuast, carbon fiber where it could, decontenting and so on. There could be some weight savings with your theoretical VVT heads as they would need to be a clean sheet design. All of which would add considerable cost (most likely equal to or more epxensive than the GT500), with all of that you'd probably be in the realm of a GT or Boss

This 500hp NA Mustang then runs into the next problem since it would be equal to or more expensive than a GT500 (since its essentially a GT500 sans blower) and at that price point it needs to equal or better the GT500 in performance. Handling would surely improve (would have to most likely be on par with the Boss LS if not better) but it would also need to exceed the capability of the GT500's 650hp engine in at least acceleration and possibly top speed. All of which is a mighty order indeed.

This is essentially the problem that the F5 Z/28 guys dont seem to see with a theoretical LS7 powered Camaro. One where the added cost doesn't justify the minimal increase in performance where it counts (on the spec sheet in a magazine) making it hard to market such a car to anybody other than the hardcore enthusiast.

I like the idea of a naturally aspirated TiVCT 5.4 since the current GT500 engine features a bore (iirc) slightly larger than the 5.0 which theoretically would allow for an equal to or better flow numbers in comparison. Piston speed is a concern still with the 5.4 (at 7k Ford has said piston speeds are in the realm of an Formula 1 car) but I think this would make a dandy engine for a car focused on drag racing.

What about:

Grand Am (Mustang's have done well there recently, though Pontiac's already used this on many a milquetoast model). Or perhaps some other race tracks? Make Laguna Seca a distinct model rather than just a Boss model subset. What about other famous road race tracks? Watkins Glen?

Palomino: Embrace the secretary's/hairdresser's market niche with a stylish but not terribly sport V6 model.

Cayuse: A small, well-muscled western horse, described by Frederic Remington as "heavily muscled, and while only about fourteen hands high, was still very powerful."

P-51. Z-28 worked well for the Camaro, and that designation had about zero previous heritage. A P-51 model would harken back to that famous and perhaps best overall WWII fighter. Various submodels could be designated for various years, i.e., P-51 D, as did the fighter.

I'll go with a P-51 model and a SVT model with a 300 hp ecoboost 4 cylinder

 

I always had a dream back when Ford still owned Aston Martin, which had a V-12 basically made of two Ford V-6s, to drop said V12 into a Mustang as a P-51 option. That would be appropriate given that the original P-51, after the forgettable Allison powered P-51A, was motored by the British Rolls Royce Merlin (manufactured by Packard and actually improved by them slightly). Somewhere on the Internets there is a video of an S-197 Stang with an AM V12 in it and it didn't look at all like some hack job.

I still think a V-12 in some Ford halo car would be great (Chevy has a V8 ZR-1, Dodge a massive V10 Viper and Ford, well, ummmm, the last Ford GT rolled out the factory door back in what, 2006? GT500's nice with a boatload of power, but I wouldn't call it a "halo car" by any stretch.

Not likely nowsadays, but ahhhh, to dream.
