has anyone yet inspected their hood seams?
For those of you experiencing problems, this is a sure cure. I first heard about it in 2005 when the Chrysler Crossfire (Mercedes SLK with a Chrysler designed body) developed rust problems along the bottom of the doors. Check out the link, and see if it is something you would try versus the dealer. You will need a bottle of touch up paint, to apply after using this product. The reported results on the Crossfire (mine never experienced rust) were a total stoppage of rust.

however, POR15 will NOT stick to painted surfaces, it shrinks and peels away, found out the hard way. rollon bedliner over acid etched metal with painted areas works well too, just dont go too heavy or it can lift the epoxy primer even... sand, etch, clean, thin coat of bedliner, next day a heavier coat, done.
over ugly, rusty metal or acid etched new metal, POR is awesome, but it will not adhere to smooth paint, and you cant paint over it without using their 'tiecoat' primer first- but that does work very well too. used a ton of that stuff under our 65 galaxie, still looks exactly like it did ten yrs ago...

Nice write up! Great information. When I went to the site, for the first time since 2006, I saw they now have a Starter Kit, with everything you need for these minor problems. So, no more buying the large containers of each product. Hopefully, this will not become a problem on the 15's.

Well ford4v429, I too have a 2009 GT (CS model) which I purchased new. Up until last Fall, the hood looked okay......yes, I have been checking. After all I've been through with my wife's 2010 Pony, I was apprehensive in checking my 2009 which too is garage stored and never driven in rain (17,000 km). Just checked it now. So far so good. I don't know what I have done if the hood blistered on my 09.....probably sell it. Matching vapor silver would be a nightmare. I really feel your pain and frustration in going through this with two Mustangs. Shame on Ford for putting so many owners through this nonsense.....for 10 years......

my 06 was 2 yrs old, took it to dealer, their camera was broken, was to take it back the following monday, instead did a little off road excursion that cost me a bumper and fender, and scratched the hood close enough to the bubbling I figured they would just blame it on that, just used that as a excuse to get my shaker hood I wanted anyways...
the wifes 07 has needed a touchup underneath a few times, last summer it started racing, caught it *just* where you cant quite see it with hood shut, but its right at the edge... tried something different and made it a even bigger mess underneath, but hope its sealed- plus poured paint inside the hood and rolled it around like gas tank sealer to seal the hidden inside too... we'll see
did manage to get ahold of the last two Fang hoods in existence last summer, so will have matching hoods for them all when the time comes... but tell you what, peeling the paint off that 4 mile absolute virgin 09 just made me about livid with Ford for some reason... then seeing the shoddy work on the auto show cars this past three years... I'm on a mission to rub Fords nose in their substandard work until I see better- I'm a Ford guy, always have been, but when I see stuff like every 2015 ford had at the auto show at twice the prices of the perfect looking hyundai/scion crap, I'm gonna squawk till the cows come home- and certainly forewarn every single Ford buyer out there I can to watch out for it, and to nail them on it before warranty can be denied- far too many folks got screwed over with corrosion obviously there a long time, even a day out of warranty. WE ALL deserve better from Ford... soon as I see it, I'll shutup, and pull the ugly auto show brand new ford pics down, but not before...
I'm really glad your 09 hood is intact, man, I'd love to know what the difference is... if you wouldnt mind, I'd LOVE to see close up perimeter pics all the way around, just to try to see what was different on one that didnt bubble anywhere... maybe drains are more open, dies were sharper/fewer jagged edges, something- there must be a reason... never thought till just now, wonder if multiple dies are swapped out, perhaps one set just 'tore' the edges worse- some look horribly jagged compared to others...
by the way, in case anyone in here hasnt seen them yet, look at the auto show albums in here and tell me what you think- better yet, tell Ford
https://www.flickr.com/photos/83232178@N06/sets/anyway, I do hope if folks have the issue, they are aware of it before warranty goes away- ford deserves every single warranty claim they get on these...
Ive seriously thought about stomping/folding my three screwed up hoods and fedexing them in a box full of those darn styrofoam peanuts to ford headquarters - that still might happen

make that three mustangs. I have a undriven 4 mile virgin 09 gt that bubbled up last year too- right from where the tiny bubbles were the day it was flatbedded home. my 06 was 2 yrs old, took it to dealer, their camera was broken, was to take it back the following monday, instead did a little off road excursion that cost me a bumper and fender, and scratched the hood close enough to the bubbling I figured they would just blame it on that, just used that as a excuse to get my shaker hood I wanted anyways... the wifes 07 has needed a touchup underneath a few times, last summer it started racing, caught it *just* where you cant quite see it with hood shut, but its right at the edge... tried something different and made it a even bigger mess underneath, but hope its sealed- plus poured paint inside the hood and rolled it around like gas tank sealer to seal the hidden inside too... we'll see did manage to get ahold of the last two Fang hoods in existence last summer, so will have matching hoods for them all when the time comes... but tell you what, peeling the paint off that 4 mile absolute virgin 09 just made me about livid with Ford for some reason... then seeing the shoddy work on the auto show cars this past three years... Krown is a rust preventative material that seems to work well on steel bodies even in the rust belts. I wonder if it would work on aluminum? Again....would it kill Ford to give some direction? I drive my Mustang only on nice days...NEVER in winter.
One might have to think twice before buying a product made of aluminum if year round driving was required....I know I would.
Just putting it out there.
I am surprised that Ford or their rep has not jumped in here to give some sort of reason for this seemingly reoccurring problem with hoods etc. I don't think that at this stage it benefits Ford in any way to have owners (myself included) so concerned and upset. Bad enough for pre 2015 models but for the new models as well....unbelievable! This group of old and new owners are Ford's best ambassadors.

As for my 2009 GTCS, I can't get decent pics right now. But just look at the pics posted by ford4v429 and my seems on the 09 look like the Hyundai seems. They are tightly seemed without excess sealant. Also the seems are smooth with a solid coat of paint.
Two shops I have gone to don't even now what the real issue is, It would be nice to get a final explanation from Ford.

Ive sent pics to higer ups at ford, got a short response from Mark Fields even, and a follow up a few days later from someone else... I think the biggest thing we all need to do is just get the issue out there- if they are going to corrode, no amount of typing will stop it- BUT if enough owners are forewarned and catch it before the thumbing of he nose they'll get a minute past the 3/36, THEN it starts hitting Ford both in the wallet and with bad press no manufacturer wants... if enough of us demand better, Ford WILL do better. this problem shoulda been gone in 2005, but instead was swept under the rug.
no car will last forever, BUT a properly cared for car should NOT shed paint in 2-5 yrs, period. like I keep telling folks- my goofy 09 has 4 miles on it, has only been washed twice in 6 yrs and the friggin paint bubbled off under the hood. this is as bad of an example as anyone could ever show...
ford should be ecstatic some fool like me bought three matching mustangs, has to say something for their 'desirability' factor, and its gotta be pretty obvious I'm a Ford fan...
I never dreamed the 09 would become the timecapsule it did, but it did, and a 4 mile car that has lived under a Shelby cover inside without so much as a test drive, had the freaking paint bubble up. if nothing else, that car to me was worth it for the smack upside the head to Ford it offers if nothing else... Ford plain and simple has screwed up these otherwise wonderful cars by a flawed production process... TSBs and excuses, while waking away from THEIR defect as soon as the 3/36 was over?
Ive said it before, I generally hate lawyers and the BS class action types, as in my thinking 99% of the time John Galt would label them as 'looters' bilking the successful producers, out of unearned demands... the merit of the suit is just a way for them to stuff their pockets... however, a decade into this and its still happening? any class action crap I want NO part in- but if ford loses their *** on this, sorry, heads shoulda rolled many years ago and the folks passing this crap as acceptable should be in a new line of work- and I'm not talking about line guys- they may be the root of the problem, BUT there are levels of quality inspections that either didnt check this crap out, OR their useless bosses said 'run it' or 'good enough'- its the midlevel guys RESPONSIBLE for the quality standards being adhered to and being acceptable in the first place that pushed this stuff out, I'd bet ya... a sloppy line guy woulda been caught in numerous QA inspections before the car rolled out the door- either they are ALL inept, or their handlers said SHH- its good enough... and I'd bet those same guys have been blowing smoke up some rearends promising 'its a non-issue' 'we get it' 'were on it' or a bunch of the other bullcrap most of us have heard from folks that just dont give a darn and run on a ego instead of a brain...
I truly think the best thing Ford could do would be offer 5 yr paint bubbling to their warranty TODAY. I mean right freaking now, Bill Ford should say '5 yrs on paint bubbling' and if the warranty costs escalate, they escalate- and the proper heads should roll.
If THEY did this, THEY could probably prevent a few looting lawyers from stuffing a few million of Fords dollars in their pockets, buyers could see Ford Corporate stands behind their products for better or worse, hold engineering/process/QA AND production folks accountable for letting things slide, and mostly make sure the extents of issues getts passed upstream- I truly believe if the guys at the helm knew how bad the corrosion issues were 5-8 yrs ago, they woulda seen to it that it was nipped in the bud... now theres a half million mustangs floating around with hood issues that never shoulda been.
Mustang Club events are going to be kicking off this Spring. I'll be giving the heads up to owners who I meet that I know have a warranty (3yr 60,000 km) regarding the corrosion problem. All others that have older models that I notice with the same problem, I'll say nothing.......They'll find out sooner or later that they're going to get screwed.
Cannot wait to see the 2015s......
Cannot wait to see the 2015s......
I have had my 2015 for almost 5 months now. The hood looks the same as the day I purchased the car. The car sits outside, has been snowed on, was driven on salty roads, and is used as a daily driver. It is being used just like my 2010, which did have the blistering issue. I think it took about 6 or 7 months before it showed up noticeably.
If see anything, I'll post it here, but so far, no issues.

I did rust proof the hood seams under the hood after hearing about the corrosion. Didn't seem to work. It may have just delayed the inevitable. This corrosion happened and spread so fast. It was crazy. I did notice that my '09 seams do have a thicker coat of paint under the hood compared to the '10. Having said that, the seams in general are pressed better on my 2009. Anyone who is purchasing a Mustang, should simply check. Pics from ford4v429 shows bad seams even on new Fords.
Tim, you would love the front edge of my Fusion's hood!
outer panels are folded over to secure door skins, hood skins, etc to structural inner panels.
when the outer is folded/crimped over, its called a 'hem'... guess they had to call it something.
look at the underside of your hood, along the outside edges, or open the door, look at the edge... these hoods are failing due to corrosion starting at the very edges of the outer panel, which are now 1/4" or so underneath, out of sight... typically they make it to the part you see with door/hood closed right around the time the warranty is over- obviously it started before then, but too bad- soon as the warranty is up, the corrosion thats been brewing (since brand new on many) is your problem.
my complaint is the lack of, or spotty sealant applied, and all the 'stuff' under the paint. brand new cars and trucks at the 15 auto shows still leaving the factory with **** under the paint- only on Fords... no other manufacturer on display had 'stuff' underneath the paint, most all had much better sealant application, some had perfect sealant/paint- namely scion and the Alabama built Hyundais...
we NEED to be a pain in the *** to ford until they look at what they are putting out to the showrooms vs other makes. there is no excuse for the way the panel fitting compares- its shoddy work in my opinion, and they need to get it under control... to me the 05-09 mustang was THE most bang for the buck ever offered(we all have our favorites) and its just unacceptable that so many are having paint bubble off due 100% to Fords lack of quality control on their panel hem/seal/painting processes.
I want ford to be as good or better than the competition- Ford NEEDS to or they are committing business suicide. I really think if enough folks question why fords seams look like crap compared to a lowly hyundai, or why so many Mustangs hace crap for paint adhesion, they will have no choice but put out better product- it just pisses me off they have shown about ZERO concern on this decade old issue, and are still sticking buyers with crap looking seams that in my opinion will have issues long before any other make on the market.
excuses/whatever- no paint on earth 'likes' being applied over dirt/wire/mastic/ecoat/whatever...clean the crap off before painting- its not rocket science. look at the **** under the paint on those f150s, nowhere near a seam. its poor prep, nothing more.

toss a pic in here... the more the merrier.
if enough of us squawk, sooner or later they will answer- hopefully with better product.
the ONLY ford I saw that was 'good' all around displayed at the cleveland auto show was a f350 duallie- it was near perfect. the aluminum truck- terrible all over, the mustangs, better but still not good as they should be...
