8 speed would be good but 10 does seem like a bith much.

My 6 speed auto would be nice to have one more overdrive gear. My LT1 Trans Am revved 2000 rpms at 80 mph. The GT with 3.15:1 revs higher than that. Mileage might improve a hair with a lower cruising rpm.

I just hope the GT never goes the CVT route.

I doubt it'll go the CVT route. My understanding is that the 8 speeds are more reliable and efficient than the CVTs, hence why they're where everyone is headed.

my sixxer with 2.73s does 2000 @ 80mph, but it's a bit slow off the line. I'm not sure how the sixxer and gt gearings differ though.

Fair point. It could be something you just need to get used to as well.

Yeah I've heard bad things about CVTs. 8 speed auto would be perfect, IMO. As far as manuals go... I'd welcome a 7 speed if that last gear was good for nothing but holding onto highway speeds and increasing mileage. So, 6 like it is now, and then an "Eco"-gear.

High torque CVTs are expensive, and to the best of my knowledge, don't exist in longitudinal form. There's also the fact that the brand that has gone all in on them for their volume cars (Nissan) has been having issues with theirs for years. I doubt Ford is considering going that route.

From a pure performance standpoint, a dual clutch box with 6-7, maybe 8 gears would be fine, but DCTs that can handle lots of power aren't cheap either, plus they have low speed jerkiness issues that are still be refined (though apparently Porsche's PDK is a standout for not having those issues). I think Ford would be better served with going to the ZF 8HP (the 6R80 is a ZF box anyway, they just bought copies of the tooling) or the new GM 8L90 (I know, sacrilege, but this new 10-speed auto is being developed with GM anyway), but apparently the engineers think they can make it work. However, the law of diminishing returns is going to rear it's head soon.

GM and Ford are co-developing a 10-speed.

So I have a '12 Vert GT MT82 and a '14 C-Max. Two opposite ends of the spectrum. I absolutely love my GT, but I have to tell you I am very impressed with the C-Max. Yes it serves a totally different purpose, but I comment about it here because I can see hybrid technology getting into all cars in the future. The little bugger C-Max is surprisingly quick when you floor it. The electric motors all-out and the 2.0 liter 4 with CVT WOT. Ok, it isn't GT fast, but this thing gets 47MPG and will run circles around Camry's, Accords, Civics, etc. So if Ford were to put a version of this power plant in a Mustang, they could make the CAFE numbers which would allow them to make more 5.0 GT's :-) Oh and I am anxiously waiting to see Ford's response to Chrysler's challenge of the Hellcat. Hello Dearborn, we need more horsepower.

While reading about the history of the 2014 Ford Edge that my wife and i just bought, Ford and GM worked together on the 6 speed automatic that the Edge use

The new 10 speed is going to be an AUTOMATIC.

This^

It's sad some people can't comprehend what they read .

Dodge has an 8 speed already, and it's auto. GM and Ford have been working on this 10-speed auto for about 2 years or so. The most gears any manual transmission with a stick has currently is 6(excluding Tractor-Trailer rigs) . All those 7 speed manual trannys are dual clutch with paddles.

You heard of a little company called Porsche? They have a 7 speed manual. Oh by the new Corvette has one too.

You're right, I stand corrected. I don't follow porsche, never cared for them. I also forgot about the TR6070 in the new 'Vettes. No need to patronize.

Yes, poor reading comprehension is quite sad. Although the title of this thread refers to a 10-speed automatic transmission, the comment I quoted and was commenting on was talking about a 7-speed manual transmission.

Yes, the 5th comment of this thread mentioned how awful it would be if they tried to make a 10 speed manual and that's where the conversation digressed momentarily to manuals with 7 speeds as that's currently the highest available on the market.
