Well think about it. The car wouldn't necessarily need to use all 10 gears all the time. You could have gears that are only used in certain instances. If they wanted they could make it act like the car had 2 different rear ends (gear ratio speaking). During normal driving it could start in 3rd gear and go up from there. Maybe skipping a gear or 2 along the way. This would simulate, for example, 2.73 gears for fuel saving. Then if you put it in sport mode it could use 1st and 2nd gear along with the skipped gears to make the car react as if it had a 3.73 or even a 4.10 rear. Its all about fuel economy for the EPA's sake (and for those of us that daily drive it and would enjoy some fuel sipping on occasion) and then mind blowing acceleration is still available when desired.
The obvious down side would be the extra weight of the extra gears.

10 speed on an auto is fine (as long as it don't break)
I CANNOT see anyone wanting to drive a 10 speed manual transmission, not unless you're driving a truck....

German 10 speed automatic.
Supposedly both Ford and GM are adapting a German 10 speed transmission for use in their future cars. The CAFE rules are forcing them into this route just as $10/gallon gas is forcing the Europeans.

When BMW switched from 6-speed to 8-speed autos, the reviews pretty much LOVED the 8-speed.
It reduces fuel consumption, C02 emissions and is now fast than the manual box cars.
It just might be the best thing to happen to the 'Stang since the introduction of the Coyote.
I'm looking forward to it.

Car and Driver said they were constantly getting the wrong gear in the 7 speed manual Vette.... or maybe it was the Porsche... either way it seems like 6 speeds might be the upper limit for a good manual.

I can only imagine the complexity behind these transmissions that are being produced!
if they ever break, get ready to give up your first born

Yeah I'm curious about how the 10speed would work.
A gear for every possible requirement.
Would be interesting if it does use multiple gear maps for different situations.

But that's one car. It's too small a sample size to say that all 7-speeds are going to be inherently hard to find the right gear in. I'm sure there have been cars with 5-speed manuals where they have sometimes found themselves in the wrong gear.
