will not start or crank, antitheft light blinking

Hey guys,

I’ve been randomly having a problem with my car not starting, when this happens, the antitheft light on my dash always rapidly blinks.

This problem has been going on since last fall and the rate at which is happens is very random. It does seem to be getting worse recently but still, it’s random when it decides to happen.

I’ve tried putting the key in the ignition with accessories on and letting it sit for 10 minutes. This use to work. Doesn’t seem to work at at all now.

I’ve research what could be causing the problem and from that have replaced few things including the ignition cylinder and ignition switch. I also replaced the key old key fob which was falling part.

I’m starting to feel really hopeless at this point. If anyone has any ideas as to what could be causing this, I’d like to know.

edit: it’s a 2011

The rapid blinking is the PATS system saying it doesn't recognize the key that turns the ignition cylinder. It may not have been your ignition cylinder or switch. This rapid blinking indicates the key itself is damaged, the transceiver ring that goes around the ignition cylinder is bad, or the wiring thereto, or the PATS module is bad.

The better idea is to not shoot a parts cannon at this and take it to a mechanic with a Ford scan tool (or equivalent) and find out exactly what's going on. It may be that replacing just the PATS transceiver ring will fix it, but that's no guarantee.

Hope that helps, and welcome to the forums!

I have a 2009 Mustang and the lights were flashing on the dash. Emergency flashers flashing. I watched dozens of videos about changing sensors.. WASTE OF TIME. My 2009 has a button at the base of the sterring wheel. Hold the button for 5 to 10 seconds and it turns the alarm system off. No problems since then.

Did you install this button at the base of your steering wheel? To my knowledge Ford did not install such buttons from the factory... I've checked everywhere on my 2006 GT premium and have been unable to locate any buttons on the base of my steering wheel.

I did not install the button at the base of the sterring wheel under the dash. I watched many video's on turning the alarm system off. I only found the one video where some one was showing the little black button. My car is a 2009 V6 anniversary edition. The person in the video said it was close to the hood release area. Mine was located where the steering wheel goes into the dash. As far as I know it is a factory button. My alarm did go off yesterday when I used the key to unlock the door. My key fob does not work. I got in the car, turned the key to the on position and pushed the little black button and the alarm quit. I have since read threads about the PATS system needing reprogrammed or replaced. Good luck, hope this helps. Look hard for the little black button it is hard to find. Your year model may not have one.
Here ya go, I was able to find the video. My button was in a different location, but it was there..

I Had 35 Years at Ford Dealerships in Parts and That Button Was At Best on a Dealer Add on System Not Factory!

Do A little Digging Starting at Where The Switch is and I Bet Your Wires are Connected To Some Box Mounted Randomly.

A Pic of That Box Will Be The Tell! Now Ford Had Some DEALER Add on Systems and Some Were a Very Clean Add on & Earlier Ones Were CODE ALARM Messy Installs.

If It Were Indeed Factory Then Your Owners Manual Would Have a Procedure For it's use!

But If You Find Different Then I'm Wrong!

All I can say is if this is in fact a factory installed button? They did not come equipped on the 2005-06 models... I searched everywhere on my 2006 GT premium and there is no button located anywhere near the base of the steering wheel nor close to the hood release area.
