Wrong key into ignition, now having problems.
Wrong key into ignition, now having problems.
So to those that have another Ford vehicle with smart key, PLEASE don't do what i just did tonight.
I was carrying a spare key from my 2009 Escape in my pocket, i happened to put it in the ignition by mistake and tried starting the Mustang with it. Obviously it didn't work since the key pattern isn't the same. But after a few trys and coming to my senses thinking, hey this isn't the right key...
so grabbed the right key and took off, everything was fine, that is until when parked at the local Tim Horton, i removed key from ignition and the car would keep running on with key completely out of ignition. COOL, right. No it isn't. Tried it a few times and i'm still stuck with same problem. Weird thing is while thinking this over while the car was still running with key off the ignition, i played around with the light switch, well guess what, when i turned the light swith off, the engine did finally stopped. Should i just reset the ECU by disconnecting the neg of the battery. This has nothing to do with tune since it started doing it just after i put in the wrong smart key. DAMMIT it sucks. Anybody has an idea.

wow.. that's crazy..
Maybe just let it sit for an hour or two. You may have activated the PATS. Is your PATS light flashing faster than normal or staying lit? If I'm not mistaken, it resets itself after a period of time. Just let it sit for awhile and then retry. The last resort should probably be disconnecting the battery.
My '69 didn't have any of those problems. oh well.
A couple of other things MP. Do you have the "wrong" key on you as you're trying to start and turn off your car? Maybe PATS is reading the transponder from that key if it's in the vicinity of the car since you tried starting it once with it.
Try removing that key and getting it away from the car as you test the correct key. Also, do you have a spare key that you could try by itself too?

This is perfect example of why Ford should hand out one BLUE and one BLACK key with new vehicles. There are probably a hundred thousand households with two late model Ford vehicles... and all of them have 4 big, BLACK keys that look exactly the same. If I was the CEO of Ford and somebody suggested this incredibly simple (and very likely almost free) idea, I'd give them an award or something.

Looks like you will have to do the battery thing. I didn't feel like my Mustang was running right a couple weeks ago so i un-did the battery for a few hours to re-set the computer. It seems to have worked but you have to re-set all the other things like time, radio settings etc.

I have a system for separating them. It probably won't work for most people.
Each vehicle has it's own key chain (most people will have trouble with this alone).
On them I have a PATS key and a door key for each other vehicle (and a house key).
Each key chain has a different fob attached to it for identification.
That way I never have the wrong PATS key and can always enter another vehicle or my house.
All my other keys are on a second key chain.
Again, this is more a show of my **** tendencies than anything useful.
Well I have 3 Ford PATS vehicles. I need more than just black and blue.
