Weird Cracking on Engine...

Hello Everyone,

I wasn't really sure where to post this, but when I was disconnecting the negative battery terminal doing some work on my car I noticed some cracking on the engine. I have no idea if this is normal, or if this is some problem that will hit me in the future. I am pretty new to cars being 19 years old, but this just didn't look right to me.

All advice is welcome and if I am just an idiot, let me know. Thanks.

Exactly where is that? Got a bigger picture to give a perspective of where it is?

That is on the front of the engine block. It is facing the grill at the top left and across to the right. I can try to get a picture put up later, but I work late and night pictures never go well.

Just another note - It's a 2014 v6 thats 6 months old and less than 7000 miles...

Looks like engine front below the intake manifold., passenger side.
OP, are the cracks deep or top coat?

They seem like just surface cracks to me...not 100% sure though. Like I said before, It just doesn't look right to me and I haven't seen that on other Mustanger's engine pics.

The timing chain/front cover.

Looks like a poor casting. Not necessarily an integrity issue although the deeper crack and pits could be...

I have never seen anything like this. If you are not going to the dealer, try posting those photos on the following forum. They have Ford employees who are members, to include people at the Flatrock plant. Perhaps someone there can give you advice or tell you what to do to get the part replaced. If this fails, contact the Ford Rep on this Forum, Deysha, who may be able to assist you.

Yep. Just cheap casting or cheap aluminum. All the manufacturers have that. The cracks don't go all the way through its just on the surface. No worries.

I have a GT and, while crawling around underneath to check things out, noticed the lower part of the block casting, near the pan, had the texture of #80 grit sandpaper. Surprising how rough it was but I suppose they really crank these things out to keep costs down; and, I'm sure it won't hurt the performance of the casting.

Now if you're a proud, truly dedicated Mustang enthusiast, you'll pull the engine and buff that out! Better get busy!

It is normal. That is just the front cover and those are casting marks. Nothing to worry about.

Sorry I haven't gotten back in a while. Just wanted to say thanks for the posts everybody and now I know it is just a bad casting and there really isn'y anything to worry about. Just kinda freaked out when I first saw that on my brand new baby! I know many of you can understand that...especially this being the first real new car purchase I have ever made. Happy Holidays Everyone!

It's just casting flash/slag. You're OK, 100% normal.

My 2011 v6 is smooth and perfect. All the other 3.7's i've looked at have been smooth. I would still bring this up with your dealer just to be safe. Just saying......
