Suspension knocking/rattling?
Suspension knocking/rattling?
Hey guys, I need some help. I have a 2012 mustang gt. the last month or so I noticed a knocking from what seemed to be the front drivers suspension. Last march I installed koni str.ts and steeds ultralites. The sound started off going over bumps and progressed to being random but constant. It sounds like a golf ball rattling around in a cup. Like 2 metal pieces bouncing off one another.
Last week (11/13) I brought it to the dealer and they replaced the front lower control arms per the LCA tsb. The sound was gone for a few days but has come back with great vengeance. I brought the car back to the dealer today and they are telling me the LCAs are fine and that the sound is coming from the springs. They won't touch the springs because they are aftermarket so they can't tell me what about them may be making the noise. I Have pulled the wheel off and everything seems to be tight. The sound happens on seemingly smooth roads, sometimes over bumps, and sometimes it won't happen over bumps. But while you are driving it is constantly happening. I may pull the front strut out tomorrow and look at it. Any advice on what to look for? I am also thinking of having ntb check it out after thanksgiving.
Here is a video of it.

Thanks guys.

I have the Steeda sport springs and Steeda Pro-Action shocks and struts and I been having the same issues, sounds like metal hitting metal when I hit small bumps or pot holes, ive called steeda and they said I didnt have the rubber softeners around the springs so I took them off and I checked everything and its all good. I cant figure out what the sound is either.
I have those on as well, so I know it isn't that. And I had steeda springs on my 06 without the rubber softeners and never had any sound after 78k miles. The only difference now is I have the konis, on the 06 I had stock dampers. I wonder if it's the strut mount.
And I'm not sure if it's my imagination but I swear I can feel it slightly in my feet.

I have the Koni STR.T's as well and even though I do not have this issue, this may be what is causing the noise.
The rear shocks have a plastic cover on the top part of the shock that remains stationary, apparently a lot of times the cover does not align on center very well and will be pushed against the lower shock tube, causing all kinds of noises as it rubs up and down against there. I would take a quick look at that.
If they are rubbing, like mine were, (caught it at time of installation) just take a torch and heat up the top of the plastic cover enough so that you can pull it back on center, then blow some compressed air on it so it cools down quickly and holds it's position.
Hopefully this is what your problem is because it is an easy fix.

Deysha,
I took it to them twice and the second time they told me it was caused by my springs, not the LCAs. They won't touch the springs to even figure out where it's coming from since they are aftermarket.
