Oil change

I hit 1080 miles and changes the oil and filter.
I put 6 qts back in like it told me online that it took 6.
Checked it and kept reading oil all up the stick couldn't find any were that it stopped.

Ive had times on other cars that were hard to read so I thought Ill just let it sit over night for the tube to empty out and see tomorrow what it looks like.

But when I went to clean up I poured all the oil I took out back into the 5 gal can expecting to fill it up and then some and only got it a little lower than full like 4 and a half qts or so.

So I promptly put it back on the rack and took out 1 qt and now it reads to top,of the ok range on the stick.

So whats going on? bad info off web ? Didn't get all to old oil out?

Your V6 holds 6 quarts. You did not mention whether or not you changed the filter which would hold about 1 quart itself, plus how long did you let the oil drain? It's almost impossible to get all the old oil out of an engine.

I had the same problem checking my dip stick. If the dip stick is bending at all while pulling out, the oil will just rub all down the dip stick looking like its over filled. Just look at the other side of the dip stick, it should read better. The sound tube delete might help as well in getting better readings on your dip stick. It is definitely in the way of checking your oil. Not sure the v6's have the sound tube or not.

For accurate info on capacities, check your owners manual.

When you change your oil let it drip as long as you can...a couple of hours if your not in a hurry. In my vehicles I let it drip until there is one drip every 10 seconds. Also, before you put on your oil filter, fill it 1/2 to 3/4 full of oil. That way you will get instant oil and oil pressure at start-up. Just remember that the oil you put in the oil filter is part of the total amount of oil you need.

Did you check your oil level after starting it up to check for leaks, and letting it stand on level ground for awhile (say 5-10 minutes) to be sure the oil has recirculated throughout your engine and then had a chance to settle back down for a proper reading off your dipstick?

Changing oil at 1k miles? Isn't that a little extreme? I have ~1400 miles on my 2014 and the oil life still says 91%. When i check he dipstick it's just under the higher dot, and still looking really clear. I'm waiting till ~5k before my first oil change, or till oil life says ~35% or so. Whichever comes first.

I change oil and filter every 5,000 miles or six months, whichever comes first. For the past few years, it has been the time that expired. Going in for my second change on this car, within a couple weeks, I guess.

A lot of people change the first oil early in the car's life to address possible engine-break-in fragments that get deposited into the oil.

I think I changed mine around 1,500mi and on my next I'll probably do it before 2,500mi.

That's beyond excessive, especially if you're using a high quality fully synthetic.

I've had the oil in my V6 tested at 10,000 miles. Using Penzoil Ultra and a Mobile One oil filter my test came back and said the oil was still good enough to use for another 7,000 miles.

When Ford recommends a 10,000 OCI they mean it. Even with Motorcraft synthetic blend that comes in it stock it should have no problems at all going 10,000 miles between oil changes. Any more than that and all you are doing is wasting money by changing perfectly good oil.

Yes, rick57. As rriddle3 mentioned and your Owner’s Manual, your V6 does take 6 quarts of oil.

Guys,

Your vehicles are equipped with the Intelligent Oil Life Monitor™ (IOLM) system which displays a message in the message center at the proper oil change service interval; this interval may be UP TO one year or 10,000 miles (16,000 km). When ENGINE OIL CHANGE DUE or OIL CHANGE REQUIRED appears in the message center display, it’s time for an oil change; the oil change must be done within two weeks or 500 miles (800 km) of the ENGINE OIL CHANGE DUE or OIL CHANGE REQUIRED message appearing. The Intelligent Oil Life Monitor™ must be reset after each oil change. Therefore, it still learns between time and mileage. You can find this info in your Owner’s Manual.
