HELP! Electric Power Steering Problem.

Hey, guys. I'm having issues with my EPS and it's driving me mad. I've taken it in to two different dealerships with no luck finding the source.

It is making a clunk sound when I turn my wheel back and forth lightly. Almost like the sound of a bad intermediate shaft, but someone told me RWD cars don't have intermediate shafts. Also, today I found another new sound which is almost like a light gurgle when I turn the wheel and hold it. However, that one isn't bothering me as much. But this clunking is driving me nuts. It makes the car feel and sound so cheap and at 4 months old and 1,800mi it's unacceptable to me.

Have any of you guys had such problems?

At first I thought it was the rack but now I'm convinced it's the EPS system itself or something in the column.

Any advice is much appreciated.

The rack is the EPAS. It may be a bad endlink from the rack.

Wait for the Ford customer service rep that frequents this forum (deysha). She will help you escalate this with Ford.

Or PM "FORDSERVICE" to get to her faster.

No sounds at all from my car that are unusual. I get a little drivetrain clunking in lower gears getting on and off the gas (if I don't do it smoothly) but nothing I'm concerned with. Pretty in line with other manual cars I've owned.

Hope you get the steering issue resolved. Please post as you get resolution incase some of us develop the same issues.

Does also sound like a noise from the spring riding on the shock mount.

I wonder if you did something on your front suspensions? If you did then it could probably be the front strut mounts that's making the noise.

If not then I would definitely not give up on working it out with the dealers hip.

I'm having a very similar noise coming from my front end when turning the wheel left and right. I noticed this sound after i got the car lowered with frpp k-springs and koni str.t shocks/struts. Its at the mustang shop getting lca and relo brackets and an uca and bracket installed to finish up the suspension. I asked the shop owner to take a look and see if anything looks off and see what he says. I believe it could be the spring binding or something. He mentioned is may be the shocks insulators. The car will be ready tomorrow evening so ill report back and see what he has to say.

I was just going to mention for the sake of others that if you turn your wheel, hold tension on it, and it makes a rattling sound like something is turning inside of something, then it's the EPAS motor bearing.

Mine has been bad since I bought my '13 new. It took forever to figure out what it was. I will be taking it in to have the rack replaced before my warranty goes out in May.

So you ask, why wait? I drove a '15 Ecoboost and the steering made the same noise, albeit not as loud as mine. It's just a defective design according to my Ford mechanic who would like to remain unnamed for obvious reasons.

I'd like to have just regular hydraulic steering back if Ford can't seem to build them correctly.

Very Expensive Fix

Ouch! My 2012 Mustang with 65k kilometers lost its power steering, fortunately in a parking lot. The diagnosis - Replacing the EPAS (electric power steering unit) which is $1600 just for the part. Going to be well over 2 grand by the time it’s done. I guess I can dream about Ford helping out.

(2014 Mustang gt) around 40000k miles HELP.... when i started driving my car started making a whinning noise when i turn about 2/4 to the left as the drive home progressed it started to do it to the right side aswell and after that when i started to brake, and as soon as i got home the steering wheel had to be fully straight in order for it to not make the noise. Could it be the EPS?

It absolutely is the EPAS. Mine's doing similarly but, much worse. New rack time and no warranty to help. My 2014 has 27,000 miles on it. There is an internal belt in the EPAS which is slipping. Non serviceable part.

Check this **** out:

I just dropped my 2014 GT off at the dealer as "Power Steering Failure" came on dash and it was harder to turn the wheel then if it didn't have power steering. Not looking forward to the call tomorrow and this just shouldn't happen with a car that has 20,000 miles on it. Ford recalled tons of vehicles from 2014 with similar issues but the Mustang was left off the list.

Anybody have any luck getting Ford to help them out of warranty?

I would have thought that the rack would be part of Powertrain but the person at the service desk said that it was not

$2200 to replace the Steering Rack. On the phone with Ford Canada now to see what can be done. Anybody here had the Airbag recall done as my dealer still says parts are not available although the person from Ford Canada says they are??

Update: Looks like it could be up to 4 days before I get a response as to whether they will help out or not. I wouldn't think it was that difficult to say "yes" or "no" and let me escalate as necessary. Maybe they are hoping that I will go away
