Boss 302 Oil Consumption

Read a couple threads with similar issue. I have a Boss 302 LS started out this weekend with 2200 miles on it. Took the car to its first track event. Checked the oil after rolling it off the trailer. It was low on the dip stick below the holes. So I added 2 quarts and it read full. Ran a couple sessions initially at 6/10's to get a handle on the new car. Watching the oil temps and pressure, during the 2nd session I noticed lower than normal pressure when on the throttle 65-70psi when it was normally running at 80-85psi. Parked it and at idle it was reading 20psi. Usually at 25+psi. Check oil and was again low and again added 2 quarts. Ran next 2 sessions watching closely initially good pressure on throttle and off. As the session went on it got progressively worse. But never saw any indicators on the dash and always had some pressure. After 2 days I had added 10 quarts. I can't imagine this is normal consumption. No leaks and no indication out the exhaust. i would think you would see that much oil being burned. Car felt strong and ran well significantly faster than my 2001 Mustang Cobra that is track prep'd. Any ideas? I have to get it to the dealer but wanted to hear if this has happened to many others. Took second place in my class so it doesn't appear to be under powered just burning oil as fast a fuel.

Lots of people have reported oil consumption issues on the non-Boss 5.0 motors too. Mine consumed oil through about 15k-17k miles, close to 1-quart every 5k miles, but has stopped the oil consumption.

That's not normal. I haven't seen anyone have that big of an oil problem. Even with tracking the car it shouldn't be burning through oil that quickly. I'd take it to the dealer. It's still under warrenty I assume.

10 quarts in two days is ridiculous.

Sorry, I misses the 10-quarts part. That is insane, get it to the dealer immediately.

Hey Boss302LS,

My name is Deysha with Ford Customer Service. Welcome to the forum, congrats on your new Boss and getting 2nd place on the track! I see you’ve been busy! Ok, there are a few factors that could be causing this issue and since I’m not a tech or an engineer, we can’t go through them right now. So, I first recommend you make an appointment with your Ford dealer for diagnosis. Then, PM me with your dealer, mileage, VIN, and contact info so I can get this escalated to your area Customer Service Manager as soon as possible. Have a good one!

Thanks I am going to take it to Latham Ford in Latham, NY tomorrow.

Bought it in Newport News, VA picked up on July 9th drove it to Troy, NY have approximately 2300 miles on it after the track event.

light stop and go traffic for the first couple hundred miles 400 miles of 65-70mph. Then a few weeks of commuting and weekend Sunday drives. Trailered it to the track after taking it off the trailer checked the oil, was 2 quarts low from the 2000 miles of easy driving. Assumed that the factory may have not completely filled it. Added 2 quarts.

Never saw a low oil light, it made pressure when the oil was replenished, initially start up pop up to 80psi as the oil circulated it would drop to 20-25pis at idle, during the track sessions pressure gauge started at 80-85psi when on throttle and dropped during 30 minutes to 60-65psi pull into the garage and it was at below 20psi at idle. I would let the oil drain back and check the dipstick and it would be 2 quarts low each session.

Thanks Greg, I love the car and I think there is a lot more in it. I was happy on Monday when I surpassed my lap time from the '01 Mustang Cobra and then dropping another 4 seconds shows what the car has. With some more time in the car I think 2:12's are possibly.

don't look for it, it is not there. yet

from another forum, quote from JJ owner of Woodbine Motor Sports

One of my good friends bought a 2012 GT about two months ago and proceeded to put about 4k miles on it, noticed a noise coming from the engine and took it back to where he bought it. Two good friends of mine work as techs at that dealership and put 5 qts of oil in the engine to bring it up to the full level. Obviously someone didnt PDI the car correctly and Ford didnt install enough oil when it was produced which brings me to the point of this thread.

After alot of checking on why and how this can happen with no oil idiot light or low oil pressure warning a Ford engineer told the tech that will be replacing the engine that the low level indicator on the oilpan is not there to actually report a low oil level, its there to report back to the dash cluster that the "oil change interval" timer needs to be rapidly advanced for a sooner service interval.

He was told that they are trying to change the programming so that the sensor will prompt a warning as well, something it does not do at the moment. The car never showed low oil pressure, it just started making noise.

Interesting and stupid all at the same time.

JJ

Wow, small world. I was raised in Schenectady, NY.... born in Troy, NY and spent my summers in Latham at my grandmothers house. Loved walking to "Hot Dog Charlies" close to the circle!!

Small world indeed. I live in Albany, West Colonie near Schenectady to be exact. I would HIGHLY recommend AGAINST goin to Latham Ford. They are bad people up there. I cant begin to tell u the horror stories ive heard from people and there experiences with LF. Its a dump and theres no organization. I live a mile from Metro Ford in Schnectady. Its clean and theres a pretty good group of dudes over there. They were willing to give me $1500 more for my trade in than Latham, and Orange Ford. I work with a guy that was a service tech there for years and he says they dont mess around. This is where i will be placing my order for a 2013 5.0 in January. I think u should take a cruise over there. Hope u get this issue squared away soon man.

I had it to the dealer on Saturday and had the oil changed. I kept the filter and a sample of the oil. I will drive it and see how the consumption is, pending information from Deysha at Ford Customer Service.

I signed up for another track event on Oct 8-9. I will be taking a couple cases of oil to make sure it doesn't get low. I will be monitoring it closely.

Rare car, somebody out of state picked it up. I think you picked up 1 out of 2 or 3 that might have been on the peninsula. Nothing outlandish mind you. I even talked to a couple who came into work talking about it.

We started talking about my Shelby, then I mentioned how the clutch made it a somewhat expensive DD with the clutch life and fuel mileage being less than ideal for that sort of thing then the conversation gravitated toward the Boss cars and the the few LS cars and yours popped up again.

Not to mention all my Mustang buddies drooling over it.
