Replaced the rear speakers today
Having replaced the front speakers earlier I felt it was necessary to also deal with the rears in order to get a well balanced sound.
So I tackled the rear shelf speakers today after winning a pair of InPhase XTC 570's on ebay for 5.50! The XTC's are well reviewed so I reckon it was worth the work.
To get at the rear speakers the rear quarter window trim panel has to be removed to get the rear shelf cover off. The speakers are fixed from above (why Ford didn't do it from the trunk is beyond reason).
To remove the window trim the main quarter trim has to be removed first. A good video of the process is in the second half of this video, the only real difference to the 5.0 is that the illuminated sills have to be lifted as well.

A trim removal tool is useful as it makes getting the retaining pins out easy. The other tools used are pictured here

What the video does not make clear is that it is only necessary to remove the trim from one side of the car as the parcel shelf is flexible enough to give access to both speakers.


On the 2011 5.0 the coat hook torex is hidden under a flap - here it is open

Unlike the 2005-9 models the speakers are secured by 6mm hex head screws rather than torex screws.

Access to the screws is restricted by the proximity of the rear screen. A small rachet is essential.

The stock speakers are pants but they do at least have a metal frame unlike the stock fronts replaced earlier..

Once again I used the Metra 72-5600 Ford Speaker Harness to make the units plug and play.
Refitting is a straight froward reverse process.

The improvement in sound quality is astounding. I have the Shaker set to Drivers seat mode and the spatial sound is superb. I was considering a sub woofer - no need now.
Job took 1h30mins beginning to end. Well worth the effort.

great write-up. when I did my rears I took the opportunity to throw sound deadening material everywhere. That also made a huge difference in getting rid of a lot of road noise.
I got a 50 foot roll of generic sound deadening material on fleabay for $70 shipped (seller: elemental designs). I looked at dynamat and the other stuff, but it was so much more expensive for what seemed the same stuff. did the doors, rear quarters, rear floor, trunk, and I also sprayed rubberized undercoating on the trunk floor and in the fender wheels (both inside and out). BIG difference..
