I use the $4 universal A/C vent mount from Amazon. Works great when I need it (impervious to acceleration), removable when I don't.
The only negative is the power cord. If I mount my Garmin Nuvi to the vent on the left of the steering wheel, the cord is easier to hide, but has to plug into the high center dash 12V outlet. If I mount the GPS to one of the center vents, then the whole thing plus cord is more noticeable but can be routed to plug into the console 12V source. But the easiest solution is simply to not need it in this car. I have a nice custom mount in my Acura DD.

I also used an available from Amazon, but it's the one with a second lighter socket. This allows me to use the Garmin power cord with the built-in traffic receiver. I cut down the power cord, and ziptied the remainder to the Arkon mount, so there is nothing dangling. If I didn't have a traffic receiver in the power cord, I would definitely go with the mini-USB-based Arkon mount.
I never thought to remove the middle section of the articulated arm. Right now, I have the middle section pointed straight down, so the GPS sits a little lower than the 12V socket on the dash.

I use a Brodit Proclip.
The power is from the centre console routed behind the radio facia panel, the panel clips back in with the power cord in there no problem and keeps the wiring neat.

For my Galaxy S III I've been using a bean bag and a phone mount which I had to permanently glue to the bean bag because the suction cup just wouldn't stay sucked in the Florida heat. This worked fairly well unless I stomped on it and then it would slid off my dash. I've been looking for a cleaner better way and the Brodit design is perfect.

I use one of these with a beanbag base:
One of these days, I'm going to put USB power plugs directly into the HVAC panel, and I'll be able to eliminate the lighter thing altogether.
