Heads Up Display

Anyone ever heard of anyone retrofitting an after market HUD in their stang in a way that makes it look factory? I've thought about it but all I can find are portable ones that would stolen off the dash of my car in minutes.

I saw the mustang in the Need for Speed movie had this, but do not see this tech actually available in any mustangs ...

I've though about this before and there are (currently) really no good options in order to do this (someone correct me if i'm wrong please). It would first involve finding a good HUD unit that is worth the price and hopefully connects to your phone or OBDII unit. That is going to be your main problem, some of the best HUD's from factory are in BMW's and you probably aren't going to find anything near that quality. Sure you may find some cheap one that uses the weird film but it will probably not look that great. So maybe you want to pull it out of another car that has a pretty good HUD? Ok well you can possibly find a module for a beamer or a Camaro SS or even the newer Cadillacs but with all you face the problem of how you're going to get it connected to the Mustang.

The only decent HUD I have seen that are wide-market (and again correct me) it currently the Garmin unit that displays your navigation. Maybe in the future others will come out with them and Pioneer has shown some pretty cool stuff but I haven't found anything at this point..

Now that I think about it, the way BMW gets around the "ghosting" effect that requires the film on the windshield in aftermarket products is by specially designing certain parts of the windshield. So unless we replace the whole windshield it's probably not going to be doable.

Yeah it is definitely not an easy task and there isn't much of a chance anyone will get near BMW quality HUD with the existing market for it. I feel there should have been an option for a HUD in the Mustang, the Camaro has it and we certainly are better than those guys The 2014 Camaro even has a color HUD that looks awesome and wayyyyyy better than the monochrome one in the previous models. If the Camaro can have a really nice color one, we should atleast have some type of HUD

The hardest part of making a HUD is finding a good display and making the windshield reflective, yet transparent. The code and interfacing with the car is a walk in the park.

I had an app on my phone that created a HUD. Worked pretty good too. I took it off because the phone wouldn't stay in place well and I didn't want to put something on the dash to make it stick there.

I've heard of that. Did it work during the day?

Seems like something like one of these would work:

Yeah I saw something like that but didn't think the screen was going to be bright enough. There's an app called HUDWAY that shows navigation information, but I haven't seen much added functionality for a while now.

I don't recall using it during the day for sure, but I'm pretty sure I did in the morning on my commute - so it must have worked.

It was plenty bright enough for me. It projected pretty well on the windshield. Not a lot of data - speed and direction. Not sure what else. You could also put the phone in a holder facing you like GPS and have it orient the display so you could read it directly rather than being reversed to light up on the windshield. It was best at night; don't recall how it was in direct bright sunlight with the top down as a HUD.

And how was the ghosting? I'm planning on trying it out soon and if it is good enough the spare iPod touch might actually have a use. Idk if I would want to leave my phone up there though

I'm in here looking for the same thing. It's the one thing about Camaros I really like and I see no reason why Ford isn't doing it as well. I really, really, REALLY want a HUD in my 'Stang. Doesn't look like a good way to get there. I'm not going to take any portable device on and off of my dash every time I get in and out of the car to have it. It has to be semi-permanent or convincingly appear permanent.

A friend of mine installed the HUD from a newer Camaro into his 2010 Camaro. The windshield didn't require any special film or special glass. I don't know what he did to install it in the older model, but it looks good. Another friend stopped by last week with his new SS and the color HUD does look good.

I wonder if you could use the Camaro or some other cars HUD and hook that up? because the info sent through the wires has to be similar.

The 2014 Mustang from the movie Need For Speed had a HUD in it but it is fake.

The cameras in place of the side mirrors and the images displaying on the windshield are fake as well.

Yep. CGI.

It was easy to notice. The older C5 vette owners regularly have issues with their HUDS. The mounts were made cheaply and they break and tend to start slipping down, and down, and down, until you can't read the HUD anymore and have to tear into the dash to fix them. I haven't seen a decent HUD out there yet. I'm figuring eventually someone will use an OBDII wireless adapter and a phone app to display the info you want to see on your phone. Sort of like the Torque app, but for HUD purposes.
