Side hash marks, whats the history and whos got them?

Hey everyone,

I was wondering if someone could explain the history of hash marks on Mustangs? What are they for and when where they first used? What color are they typically? One side or both?

Also since I am in the mods section if you have pics post them any color will do, and. I am thinking about putting these on my GB GT along with some hood spear decals. Thanks in advance

Look through the threads and search on the Internet. This has been discussed quite a few times recently. It was basically bc there were a lot of old race cars that looked the same so they would use these stripes in different colors to tell which one was which when they came in aka pit stripes. That's basically it. Others can tell you more. I'm sure if you search it you'll find the history

Gotta show her off whenever I can...

Nice, are they typically on both sides? I think for the sake of being symmetrical I would like to do both but that may be taking away from the meaning of them. Not finding much on this through google, seems like it started out as a Corvette thing(?) during the 24hr LeMans where they took red masking tape and put either 1, 2 or 3 lines to help distinguish the cars since they were 3 identical Vettes.

*Edit*
found out more by searching FIA stripes looks like either Shelby or Datsun was the first to use them for the same reason listed above. If anyone has more pics feel free to share, the more I think about it, the more I want to put them on.

Yeah they're very easy. Hardest part is getting them measured (if you do it yourself) and yes they are on both sides. I think it's a good touch of color and since it's so small you can really get away with things like green on black or terlingua yellow on vista blue.
I got mine at a shop that makes signs. They design any kind of vinyl you want. I got them for $16 and installed at the shop they're $20. I should have got them done at the shop bc they're not exactly symmetrical on my car (you can't tell at all) and they have a few bubbles (which went away in the sun anyways)

Very easy mod and something that can change the look of your car

No, back in the day they were only on the pit side of the car. They helped a multi car race team pick out different drivers on their team.
