Exhaust pipe diameter

I did some research but couldn't get an exact answer for my particular question.

I want quad exhaust but I am always concerned about the sound. I know the v6 will never sound like a v8 but I don't want to sound so raspy that my ears will bleed. My friend has the Borla Atak cat back system for the v6. I like the sound of it but again I want the quad look (and possibly even better sound?)

I noticed that they have a quad Borla Atak system for the gt500 but the pipe size is 2.75 compared to my stock 2.25. Would getting the cat-back and catted midpipe that are both 2.75 pipe diameter make a difference?

My concern I suppose would be back pressure loss. Are there other quad systems out there that people are running that really like them? Another friend of mine with a v6 put quad Magnaflows with a straight pipe. He is too loud and even got banned from autocross for being silly loud. I definitely do not want to go that route.

Go with a magnaflow street or Borla Touring style exhaust and get quad tips welded to them. Of go with some GT500 stockers. Some people swear by them. Also don't remove your cats. Those keep the rasp down by a lot. My setup isn't too loud but it's noticable. BBK shorties, 5.0 oem H pipe, MagnaFlow Street series axel backs. Good bass sound, no rasp at all. Even has a beefy gurgle to it.

Back preasure isn't something to worry about when choosing axel-backs. It's the midpipe that help make most the exhaust power. You also don't want larger than 2.5" anyways. Unless you keep your over axel pipes stock. My GT H pipe is 2.75"- 2.5" i believe.

here's mine... not raspy at all. Although, as the weather is getting colder, the exhaust note is louder than when the motor is warmed up.

Edit.... I revved 2k, 3k, 4k

This is another video I made a while ago when the kit was built with just the dual tips and not quads. My current setup pretty much sounds the same as this. There may be a marginal difference now, but this is just to give you a rough idea.

I was waiting for you to chime in haha. I'm pretty sure your car is louder than mine now lol. That muffler on there quiets things down a LOT at low rpm and cruise, but at WOT it screams like a banshee that is escaping hell.

First off, are you trying to get a larger diameter pipe for sound/perf reasons, or are you just trying to get a quad tip exhaust? Does borla (or whatever brand you prefer) not offer other mufflers with a few tips as options?

From what I've heard, you don't want to go above 2.5" in catback piping if you aren't running forced induction. Any larger and you'll start seeing losses. You might be fine to run a 2.75" muffler as it's just the end, but I'm not familiar with others who have done it, so I can't really say.

Also, to be technical, backpressure generally isn't a good thing. A larger pipe will reduce backpressure (and hopefully free up a few hp by making it easier to push gases out of the cylinders), but if you go too large, you'll lose your scavenging effect which means it'll take more effort to push the gases out of the cylinders (which will lose you some hp).

I really wouldn't go any wider than 2.5" on this exhaust, you move the torque curve too far to the right.

So it seems that 2.5" diameter is the route I want to go. I actually like all exhaust clips on this page. Even a friend of mine with a 3.7L was interested in these setups. I like the quad setup mainly for looks since sound out of these exhausts are similar.
