2012 base V6, automatic trans and bone stock ...

This is my first Mustang and I’ve never had a canned tune before. I’m looking for 87 tune recommendations that offers good all-around drivability characteristics. That is, a mild tune which picks up where the factory left off in their original programming and cleans things up, so to speak. I’m not really interested in 1/4 mile times or dyno sheets as this is my daily driver. I average about 50% city and 50% highway miles. Has anyone had a mild tune installed, if so which company and octane did you go with?

I can only surmise that aftermarket canned tunes must be rather subjective and/or not cost effective for a factory stock V6. I have decided to go with a Steeda 87 octane street tune and I'll will be working with Steeda Gus who will be helping me put this tune together.

I’ve decided to pass on adding a CAI as it wasn’t going to be deal breaker in getting this Steeda 87 tune. Of course, the CAI can always be added at a later date if it’s really needed.

 

I'd recommend the CAI....it can really wake up with the tune.

 

I wouldn't bother with a tune with out the intake. I will bet you go back to the stock tune in a short time.

 

Look into VMP as i have tried many auto tunes and his is the best for overall drivability. Drives like stock but firmer shift points and increase in mid and top range power. You do not need a CAI to gain from a tune. The auto set up alone will increase your performance and you will gain 10-15 peak rwhp.

 

Gus can make you a tune that doesn't slam the gears on your automatic if you want it that way. I have one from him done like that. Once you run a tune, you'll never like the factory tune anymore .

I think many V6 owners would agree that the factory programming is lacking in refinement and that there’s room for improvement. I’m going with a mild 87 tune from Steeda Gus and the stock airbox / motorcraft paper filter will be getting the job done. This Steeda tune is all about making my bone stock V6 feel and perform better like it should. I’ll start another thread with a tune review after running a few tanks of fuel and report the change in MPG, if any.

I run 89 street tune from bama with a C&L CAI and love it. The way your trans shifts with a tune (automatic) is actually better for your transmission. Cushioned shifts are caused by heat and heat is the number one cause for failure in an auto.

 

Hows the Steeda tune? Any feedback yet, I am looking for the same as you.

 

Jay, I have ordered the 87 Steeda tune and should be receiving it sometime next week as there was a 2 week delay in processing my order. Then I’ll run a few tanks of gas for a tune evaluation and report back.
