So... any thoughts on how to safeguard against this?

With the 10% ethanol content in almost all gas now, none of it is that safe. It has a higher octane rating so it bumps the rating but doesn't burn like gasoline. So even 93 is a false 93 gasoline content.

...but if you get a tank full of 87-90 and heat soak your motor, you could still be in trouble.
Why cant the custom tunes use the "adaptive spark" timing adjustability?

Well I can assure you this doesn't happen at all stations.
Buy from a reputable station and I would say you get what you are paying for.
I am part of a family that owns and operates 11 stations. We also supply fuel to approx. 25 more and I can assure you that we would never mix the two grades. If a load doesn't fit into tank it will be dropped at another station or returned to our bulk plant.

A few of the local speed shops around here test the fuel from local stations. Chevron seems to do a better job of keeping the advertised fuel ratings.

You know i posted about gas mileage a while back and was heckled. People said "he is worried about mileage and tuned". I sometimes wonder is it the gas that is giving me an issue. I only get 17 hwy mpg and that's using cruise control. I'm never sure what is going on. I almost want to take this CAI off and de-tune it.

I can say that I know first hand that this doesn't ever happen, at least here in MI. There are state inspections that look for this type of thing. The inspectors just drop in at any given time. It's UNHEARD of in MI. You just can't get away with it and the risk aren't worth the profit to be made if this was carried out. They just don't dump 87 in a 93 tank LMAO. That's craziness!
