When should I get my oil changed?

Just purchased my new 11 5.0 and was wondering when should I change the oil. At 500 miles or 1000 miles? This will be the first oil change.

The manual says to do it when the computer tells you to.

Then there are reports of people having tick issues if changing the oil too soon.

I'm debating on the free oil change now at 3K or waiting till 5K and starting full synthetic.

Much better flow at cold temperature start-up (cold like in up-state NY/Minnesota etc. Not 40f Florida cold ) Better high-temperature performance/durability/viscosity retention.

Change your oil at 4000-5000 miles and you'll be fine-if you go full-synthetic, use the OLM, up to 10000mi/1 year for normal conditions.

Everything. If it's a job oil does, synthetic does it better.

Thank u and i spend summer and winter in Montana, so i know 'real' cold too i laugh at these southerners who freak out a below 60s.

But back on oil, that all makes sense. The only reason id go synthetic is for performance. ( unless it costs a lot more) What kind of gains? Horespower or just all around less engine stress/wear....? Thanks

I just spent 3.5 years in Montana with a V6 mustang, I ran only synthetic and never had an issue. Don't do it for gains though. You may see some HP out of it, but it will be more seat of the pants feel. The reason I like synthetic is because natural oil molecules shear and break down as metal parts rub, grind, slide, and slam into each other. That's one of the main reasons that oil USED to have to be changed every 3000 miles. Synthetics don't shear. And these days, the main reason for an oil change is just to clean the engine out. The oil collects carbon, metal shavings, water, etc and the only way to get it all out is to flush the oil.

I wasn't exaggerating in my last post haha, synthetics do it all better. Lubrication, life, shearing, cold and warm weather viscosity, cleaning, etc.

Intended to do 1st change @ 1000 miles, didn't get to it until 1700. Replaced oil with Pennzoil Ultimate full synthetic + stock Motorcraft 500S filter. Am sticking with automated maintenance minder from here on out, although it seems to want a change every 7000-ish or so.

did first oil change at 6K and second at 12K
I use Motorcraft synblend 5W-20 and OEM Motorcraft filter

I keep both oil and filters on hand for my next change.

joe, you really only two options as to when you should change your oil; when the manufacturer says you should, or when you feel like it.

I believe most enthusiasts change their oil when they feel like it, hence, you will get a wide range of different answers to your question, but most will agree that there's no reason to change it below 1K miles.

congrats on your purchase. you'll enjoy it more and more as it gets broken-in.

I used to ponder the same question till I landed a designer position at a major car company. Do what the manual tells you to do...use the proper oil that the manufacurer tells you to use. Motorcraft syn-blend 5-20. if you all wanna change it earlier than recommended...no harm...it's your'e money.
I will still change mine before 10,000 miles...probably 8,000....I just can't wait till 10k...it's in my blood...
