Stock to Significant Upgrades. My First Opinions
Hello all,
I finally picked up my car from Galpin Auto Sports today. It was like a newcar. So many new features. I will list them. My car is a 2012 GT Vert Automatic.
This is the list of things I done.
Stock to 3.73 gears.
Ford Racing Tune
K&N Filter
J&M Extreme Lower Control Arms
Ford Racing Springs (lowered 1.25 front, 1.5 rear)
Panhard Bar
American Thunder Flowmaster Axlebacks
Painted Brake Calipers
Shorty Billet Antenna
The LOVES:
With the car lowered, it handles SO well. Very noticable difference over the stock springs. The ride is just ever so slightly more rough, but not noticable unless you are looking for it. Also, the LCAs seem to have eliminated wheel hop. I have floored it a few times, wheel spin, no hopping. Also, the lowered car looks a lot better. And, the painted calipers are great. Antenna is amazing.
The LIKES (But not quite as good as I expected)
Ford Racing Tune - Still a TON of throttle lag. I was hoping this would be for the most part eliminated. However, at WOT, the car stays in the powerband and accelerates smoothly.
3:73 Gears - Car seem a bit quicker off the line, but not throw you back in your seat fast. My buddy's maunual 6 speed 2012 5.0 throws you back in your seat without any mods. Seems to have lost a bit off its fastball when punching it at high speeds. Also, just the slightest whine. Talking with Galpin, they said with 3:73 there may be a bit of whine. I hope this isn't the case. This, I must say is a cool upgrade, but probably not worth the cost.
The DISLIKES - American Thunder Axle Backs. THEY ARE LOUD and DRONE LIKE CRAZY on the highway. I am having my stock mufflers re-installed tomorrow or Friday. When driving home uphill, I ended up with a headache from the drone. Not so bad during city driving at all, but forget about the freeway. UGH! I wonder if Roush drone is like that.
......
I was under the impression that the car would FEEL much more powerful with the 3:73s and the Ford Tune. While it is definitely faster and smoother, it doesn't quite give me the butterflies in the stomach my friends manual transmission 5.0 does. And his car is stock.
Overall, I give all my mods an 7.5 out of 10. I am happy, but was expecting more wow. Perhaps with an Auto, I just can't really feel that power.
One IGNORANT question. When I turn traction control off, I simply press the button. However, I know you can press it for 5 seconds and it does more. What is that? Can that be why I have throttle lag so bad? Do I need to hold it off for 5 seconds, or is the single push of the button sufficient.
The guy from GAS test drove the car and said it was like a spaceship. He believes that my car would run 12.3s or 12.4s right now. I just have to find a local track in the Los Angeles area. I want to do this as I believe it would be a blast.

That's a lot of good stuff! The frpp tune is a little conservative. As for the traction control, when you hold it for 5 seconds it disables advancetrac completely. Does nothing for throttle response. For better throttle response check out any of the reputable tuners..Bama, Steeda etc. And like Mike said, no drone on the Roush's.

No offense but the frpp tune to be blunt does not compare to a reputable tune like steeda, bama, BBR, Lund from what I hear. I run a steeda race tune and from stock it's night and day difference. Glad to see your enjoying your Stang though. Nice mods besides the tune

Roush ABs here too. No drone that I've noticed.
Got mine from from Steve at PureSpeed and they really are awesome!!!
About your Ford Racing springs...
Do they require anything additional? I wasn't thinking about LCAs, but I would like to lower my 11GT without spending a fortune.

Galpin just changed the springs and installed a panhard bar. I think that is the minimum you need to do.
Amazing difference in the corners. I can't even imagine what it will be like when I get sway bars, shocks and struts and upper control arms.

I am sure you are right about Bama, Steeda and BBR. I went with Ford Racing to make my wife happy and keep my warranty. Bought the bama tune first, and there were problems with the sct tuner. Had to get a new ECM. For now, sticking with the FRT although I wish I could go with Bama or Steeda.

Get a new tune. BBR or Jon Lund would be my choices. Disabling the AdvancTrac has nothing to do with throttle lag. That's all tune. Get a new/better one and you'll notice a huge difference. Roush parts are a dime a dozen but people seem to love them so I'll recommend them. The Borla ATAK mufflers are my top choice though.

LOL. What route would you go with instead? You know you like the sound of the Borla systems........

If you can fix the issue with the bama sct tuner, it's well worth it. The tuner makes a big difference in your throttle response . Does the 11 plus 5.0 have a slight delay when accelerating with pedal down hard. I know my 11 sixer had a slight delay and once I got the bama tuner the delay was gone. Awesome throttle response, and pulls harder. I don't know about the actual hp or torque increased numbers with tune, but you can definitely feel a difference. Well worth it.
I have the Flowmaster exhaust system and love it but im sure it sounds different for the 5.0 compared to the v6.

As far as springs go, depending how much of a drop you take it can be as easy as a spring swap. With some of the more aggressive drops you'd be looking to get some adjustability in there (ie caster and camber) to compensate for the geometry change.

If you had a M6 you would like the FRPP tune. It is not the best for an A6. Like I said over at AFM, the Roush do not drone, nor do the GT500s. I have the Roush and I love them, they are also the 3rd system I have had on my Mustang, fourth if you count the stockers.

NO drone with my Roush AB.
The traction control is 2 types of traction that can be turned off. For racing or spinning the tires you should always press brake and hold TC button for 5 seconds. ALL traction control is OFF "Advance Trac Off"
Push once and you arejust taking off traction control but not the other mode. (I forget what it is, im sure someone will chime in)
Press the TC button twice and you enter "sport mode"
I see no point in pushing it once, useless to me, because if you get on it and get wheel spin it catches and bogs.
Sport mode Is like for a little fun if your getting on it. Its allows a little wheelspin but in my experience if theres too much spin or the car goes sideways at all, it catches.
Bottom line, hold for 5 seconds and turn off all types of TC.
