Let's see how this all plays out. I know, two different cars, but my g35 has well in excess of 350 passes. I am considering the mustang because I anticipated it could handle the abuse.

There's a huge difference between running down a drag strip for fun and enjoyment, and running down a drag strip to get that last 1-5% out of a car. Most people, myself included, don't run the car at more than 95% potential because, frankly, getting that last. 0.03 of a second is not as big a deal as driving it back home afterward. It's when you start doing abusive things to the drivetrain in the hunt for that last 5% that the problems start. Stock drivetrains are almost never designed to go 100%, 100% of the time. They are designed to handle 90% for a long time. I doubt you drive your G35 quite like these guys are driving their mustangs. I'm quite sure my transmission will have no problems handling anything I throw at it.

My g35 went low 14's (14.1, 14.0) stock. With highflow cats, and really good air, I ended up going 13.7@102. Then I started with other mods: dual exhaust, intake, and plenum spacer. I picked up a little power. The next summer I ended up frying my clutch. That was after about 125 passes and 25k miles.
I got a new clutch, and lightweight flywheel. The flywheel destroyed my ability to launch. I went from low 2.1 sixties to 2.3 sixties. I then bought a piggyback, and dedicated wheels and BFG DR's. Those DR's have about 225 passes on them, with 6k to 7k rpm launches. My aftermarket clutch(clutchmasters) has held up just fine. The transmission, is just fine, with almost 400 passes with 3 or 4 full throttle shifts at 7200 rpm on each run. The only problem is that I cannot powershift 1>2 anymore, so I have to make that shift at 5k rpms. My halfshafts haven't had any problems, and my diff is still doing fine.
The car ended up doing a best of 13.264@103.96mph, with a 1.895 sixty. The last 75 passes or so were fighting for hundredths. My best time was in November of 07. In October of 08(11 months later), I ran a 13.274, just one hundredth off my best time.
So yeah, I know about fighting for that last 3%. The car has over 100 pulls on the dyno, numerous autocross sessions, and countless canyon runs. My car is making 100hp/100tq less than a stock 5.0 (265/250 at the wheels), but I am definitely driving it as hard as these guys.

I have to say I highly respect these guys going out and pushing the car hard. I hate this happened but the Mustang community has learned a lot from these guys about the new 5.0. Hopefully it was just a bad backfire.
