Calling on from Zto5, Gabe and other Boosters

I posted a question prior regarding oil pump gears but haven't got any info. I wanted to call on you guys directly.
I will be going to a vortech kit within the next month and wanted to ask if you guys had or considered it warranted to upgrade the oil pump gears?

From reading another forum , they make it sound like they will shatter at 600 crank hp. From what I can tell it mainly has to do with high rpm stress.

Just wondering if anyone of you had done this or thought about it prior to SC install. I am just trying to gauge if I want to spend the extra $$$ for something that may not be needed.

Thanks in advance...

Burton has the Magnacharger and Gabe has a Whipple. Not sure they would be able to help you with your question.
You're going with a Vortech which taps into the oil system, correct? Is that what you are referring to?

The engines turn the same RPM when boosted, they just get up there quicker. Consequently there's more hydraulic stress on the gear. Blowers help you find the weak spots in the power train!

Look at it like insurance. Are you going to push it hard frequently? So, what's the worst that could happen?

KABOOM!

I think the Vortech is self contained also. (I think). But I was referring to the oil pump gears giving out at high crank hp and stress when you get up higher in the RPM range. From another forum , some SC guys seem to think that they will eventually fail possibly causing catastrophic engine damage. The cost of the oil pump gears are around $350. but the labor involved is something like 6 or 7 hours to get them changed. Just wondering if anyone that is a running a SC has done that or has worried about it.

That's what I was thinking. Even at a conservative 600hp at the crank , I fear that it still would be putting alot of extra wear on the gears. I don't plan on bumping it off the rev limiter or running over 6000 or 6500 rpm but I also don't want to worry about it if I hit it once or twice.

The cost of the gears isn't bad but the install looks like a PITA and $$$

I thought about doing them when I did my blower a few months back, but opted not to do them. Mainly just being lazy. I wouldn't exactly call the gears job easy. I was told by my tuner that it's not so much rpm, but hitting the rev limiter that wreaks havoc on the gears. There are a few kits out there that retain a powertrain warranty, so I'm not too concerned. I'm actually more concerned with my rods than gears. How many people have actually lost the oil pump? I have only heard of one case. Either way, I don't plan to go any further power wise with my setup. I just got my tune worked out and I figure I'm sitting around 500-550 whp. I would put more consideration into the gears if I decide to go bigger some day.

How spirited do you drive? I don't plan on taking it out to the track or anything and I have hit 6500 rpm once in the last year . I get too skeered to take it up to 7 or 7500

Yes,.....you are correct about the Vortech being self contained. (my mistake.)
I'm pretty sure my car, ('13 Roush Stage3), has the stock oil pump gears that came from the Ford factory. I don't really drive spirited all the time and when I do I'm not really high up in the RPM range.
Good luck!

That helps. If Roush doesn't seem to think it is necessary with their setups then I should be GTG. I doubt if Roush would put all that into their cars if they were worried about the gears.
Your stage 3 doesn't have the Aluminator engine does it? I think those come with the HD gears

Like I said,....I'm not positive about it with the Roush cars, but there is never any mention of it.
I don't have the Aluminator unfortunately. Had I known they were coming out,.....I definitely would have one. Still want one. lol

I think I'll e-mail them and see if I get a response.

I would LOVE to have a Roush SC setting on top of mine but I just can't fork over the 6k. Or should I say my wife would not likely be my wife anymore if I did. Now that doesn't sound too bad on certain days

I haven't seen any mention of the oil pump gears failing on people running 600hp to the wheels. Guy with a twin turbo kit on here has i think like 638 on the stock engine.

I drive it pretty hard, but I really don't rev it out unless I'm racing. If you're scared now, just wait to you have another 150 hp on there!
