Best non drone axle back mufflers.
Best non drone axle back mufflers.
I have Flowmaster American thunder on my 2011 Gt and love them except on the highway. I get a lot of drone. Any suggestions? I have heard and road in a car with the borla atak and they are too loud for me. I was thinking of roush
I have the Roush axle backs. They drone at about 2100/2200 RPM. Depending on rear end gearing, this is about 80Mph in 6th. Any more or less and it goes away. Your results may vary.
They are not as loud as you might want. To me, they are the same as stock while cruising, but are louder when you stomp on it. If I were 25 again, they'd be too quiet for me. But at 50, I like them. Of course now at full throttle I have the sweet sounds of forced induction.

As others have said, GT500 mufflers from Ford Racing. No drone whatsoever. Wake it up a little more by removing the resonators (located before the rear axle). Sound is perfect for me. Again...no drone...at all.
I think the only people who won't like the GT500's are those who prefer "the louder the better". Peter is right though, yanking the resonators out will increase the volume some too...as will deleting the cats.
Quality over quantity, personally. The GT500s sound incredibly nice. The volume isn't that high but, the tonal quality is fantastic. I have a 14 auto car now and I rescued these from my wrecked 2012 for this exact reason. It actually made the 2012 MT82 car sound like the Bullitt soundtrack on low volume.
Auto cars are particularly prone to droning and the dealership had put Dronemasters on my new car to make it sell quicker, I guess
. They were so bad I threw stock mufflers back on until I could get something else. I pulled the GT500s from the old car and gave the Dronemasters to the insurance company when they settled with me for the totalled '12.

The GT500 mufflers sound great, and, IMO, how the GT should have come stock. With the resonators removed, sounds really nice. But...dohc97 & lasserred may be onto something that I failed to include. ...the GT500s are NOT THAT LOUD. So, if you are looking to get some real noise, you may need to move up to aftermarket (Corsa, Roush, Borla, etc.). But, with the GT500 you are assured of no drone whatsoever, at any speed. With a great price. Plus they look great, too.
I love the sound and tone of my GT500s, but I wish they were louder at high RPM. They are good volume for the street, but at the track with the windows down and helmet on it's hard to distinguish when the engine is approaching redline. I like to shift by sound, and I have a hard time telling the difference between 5500 and 6500rpm. So often times I have to glance at the tach, which I'm not a fan of.
I think I'll do a resonator delete at some point. That might help.

Of course, just because Ford Racing used them, doesn't mean that Borla doesn't have some better options to suit you or that another brand appeals to you more. There is a sticky for sound clips, and if you check reviews for "drone" you can usually get a pretty educated answer if it will sound the way you want before you drop the money.

I have the Ford Racing SVT Sport mufflers and are like the GT500 mufflers in their deep tone only louder. These are different in tone than the regular Ford Racing Sport mufflers and you can tell the differing tones in person. I absolutely love them in conjunction with the quad pipes. When I added the Kooks side pipes you could wake the dead at WOT and still 0 drone.

The exact reason I went with the GT500 quads over another brand.
