Aluminum driveshaft?

You guys considering a one piece shaft should remember that you'll likely have to readjust your pinion angle, which will require either an adjustable UCA or a set of adjustable LCAs.

Definitely. I had a one piece on my GT500 with an adjustable UCA and LCAs. After resetting the pinion angle, no vibration. When I went to the Griggs GR40SS rear suspesnion with torque arm, there was no adjustability. The vibration about tore the car apart at 80-100MPH. I then switched to a 2-piece aluminum/chromoly from DSS and no vibration. It was only 27 lbs versus 40+ stock, but not as light as the 20 lb 1-piece aluminum. There is a very good chance you will have DS vibration if you don't do an adjustable UCA at minimum. This IS why Ford put a 2-piece in the Mustang.

I had Brenspeed install a DynoTech one piece on my 08 Bullitt - with no adj UCA or adj LCAs - no vibration or other problems. Nothing but good from the one piece. I think that the installer makes a big difference.

I was at Brenspeed in July of last year. But I wish that was my Bullitt that you saw at Brenspeed last week. But that was Terry Tigerhonaker's Tiger Machine that you saw. You can see his current mods over at IMBOC. But he is known as "Secret Squirrel" and not talking about the mods he is having done now.

I am happy with my 4" one piece from Coast Driveline. The did my 3.73s and upsold me on the drive shaft at install by offering me 100 off the price and free install. They even relocated the brake cable clamp no charge should some day I install a shifter or lower the car.

I'm leaning toward this DSS unit if I get one.

What I find entertaining is this thing about drive shaft loops in a non racing application. Cars and trucks have been rear wheel drive for longer than they have been front wheel drive. Including the golden era of musclecars. I can't recall any drive shaft issues of the kind mentioned ever in a non-drag strip application.

I came to this thread after Googling about the one-piece drive shaft. I have a 2007 GT 5-speed, and the drivetrain is starting to get really sloppy, especially in 1st gear, but also when I put my foot on the accelerator while driving at highway speeds I will hear and feel a slight "clunk". I only have 28k babied miles. Is this slop/clunkiness a driveshaft issue or a clutch issue or something else? What is the best cure? Thanks.

Well, not knowing why your drivetrain feels sloppy, or what is causing the "clunk," it's hard to say what a cure would be. You may need a thorough inspection of your drivetrain and suspension.
If they can't find anything, then you can start eliminating things, like your driveshaft.

I did a lot of research before ordering mine. Best deal out there is Shaftmasters. $599 shipped. Easy install and unless you're lowered you don't have to touch pinion angle. Weight difference is about 19-20# less. I race regularly so I also have to tell you it didn't change my speed or ET at all. This surprised and disappointed me Absolutely smooth up to 120 mph so far.But I feel it is safer.I run an automatic by the way. Hope this helps.

I too, have an automatic with the Shaftmaster 1-pc D/S. I recently took it out (thought it bent, but that was not the case). I went back to the dragstrip with the factory 2-pc D/S with no other changes. Same dragstrip, same car, same mods other than the D/S. Only notable difference was that the air was worse (density altitude was 500' to 1000' higher) when I ran with the 2-pc so I expected it to run a couple tenths slower with the heavier 2-pc and worse air, but it only hurt my 1/4 mile ET by .05 seconds on average and my trap speed actually improved almost 1.5 mph! I'm now half tempted to sell the 1-pc on Craigslist and reinvest that money in another mod.
