It's entirely possible the computer simply adjusts the timing table over the first few seconds of running, tweaking it slightly where it detects knocking until it finds the healthy middle. This could even partially explain that article last month about Mustangs putting down more rear wheel horsepower than they expected. Someone might have put 93 (or even higher) in the engine, while Ford's numbers are based on 91.

I wish I could get 93 in San Diego. All we get is 10% ethanol 91. Sucks ***.
