2011 5.0 - dynos and discussion

Hi guys. I've seen some discussions here in the past on what difference, if any, there is between a brand new 2011 5.0 engine and the same engine later on after its been broken in.

Some are skeptical they make more power after breaking in, others know they are but just arent sure how much is realistic to expect.

Well today I have some numbers to add fuel to the fire

This dyno below is from one of our two 2011 5.0's. Both our cars are manual transmission cars. First pull is brand new with our cold air/tune. Second dyno is the same car, same modifications several thousand miles later.

This car except for the cold air and tuning has no other engine related modifications, not even exhaust.

As you can see peak is up about 11.5 horsepower with some points in the band coming in with 20hp more. Torque is up substancially as well since being broken in.

Just for fun we decided to tweak the tune further on this car since we had it on the dyno already. Here is the result of that.

410 to the wheels with just a cold air and tune is not too shabby.

You may have seen one of ours previous post where one of our test cars went a best of 11.96 at over 115. That was with a brand new engine with no break in.

With some more tune tweaking we think we can go deeper into the 11's at 116 to 117mph with just a cold air and tune through stock exhaust on drag radials. In the coming weeks we hope to have the opportunity to get this done as well.

Any idea what the Density Altitude was for the two runs, or at least the weather conditions?

Very nice numbers, though. I just need to save up for a while before I get this for mine!

No idea on density altitude but I can tell you on the original dyno the temps were in the mid 90's. On the 405 run the air temp was right around 80 degrees, so it was a bit cooler, not cold though.

You should be able to get approximate altitude from Google Earth.

Wow, those are some serious numbers. Seems a bit high to me, but hey, good job on the tune! Congrats.

I can also backup Gus's findings as we saw EXACTLY the same thing going on with my car

pre break in (54 miles on odo) 375 RWHP
post break in (2,400 on odo) 391 RWHP

Broken in with livernois Motorsports tune 415 RWHP
broken in Livernois tune tweaked for Steeda CAI and Steeda CAI installed 431RWHP

10 minutes later we installed the Steeda CAI an tweaked the tune to math the CAI and netted

The car was baselined with 56 miles and made 375 RWHP which is what we see from all of the manual trans cars. The next 2,000 miles were spent at 7,000 rpm's on the road course and when put back on the dyno with no mods it made 390 RWHP. This is typical of what we see from GM cars after hard break-in's as well.

People have asked about dyno calibration, but this is a new AWD Dyno-Jet that is 2 months old.

A stock GT500 makes around 440 RWHP on this dyno.

Thank you

According to Google Earth the Altitude for the shop is 14 feet and accuracy is supoosed to be around +/- 10 feet.

Seems reasonable, I checked my address and it was about 6 feet off since the house is 11 feet above sea lvel

Gus that is great news. I dynoed about 392HP with Steeda's old 93 tune and about 2,000 miles on the car. I now have 4,000 miles and the car is starting to scoot rather nicely.
