NASCAR Scraps Points System
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/201...ts.changes.ap/
A race winner will receive 43 points under the new system, and the points will decrease down to 1 for the 43rd-place driver. There will be three bonus points for the winner, one bonus point for every driver who leads a lap, and one bonus point to the driver that leads the most laps.

That's worse.
"If you're not first, you're last!"
They should give points to top ten only. And the points should be exponential. Reward winning. 43 points plus 3 for winning is stupid. Give 100 points to a winner. Then 75, 50, 40, 30, 25, 20, 15, 10, 5.
Nobody cares if you led a lap because you stayed out when everyone else pitted.
Nobody cares if you led the most laps and finished 17th or 37th because of a wreck.
You are really losing me NASCAR.

For 60% of the field there wouldn't be any point of racing, since they don't have equipment for a Top 10 finish. They might as well start the race and park the car after few laps and save the equipment for future races.
I agree that Top 10 drivers should get more points than the rest, but the rest of those drivers gotta receive some points too.

Maybe have drivers points like I described, and then have the owners points system be the 1-43 points and everyone gets a point.
To be honest if I were in charge, and apparently 11-43 are lucky I'm not, i would take away points at the bottom of the scale if everyone had to have a point. 1-35 might be positive, but 36-43 are losing points every time they finish that way.
Somebody has got to shake things up as it's all just getting to boring and predictable.
Or maybe it always was.
I also don't care for the 4 different broadcast networks. I guess nobody can afford or wants to commit to broadcasting every race. But at this point I'm getting too lazy to even find the **** races on Sunday or Saturday on satellite or cable or antenna or whatever.
I guess I'm just a curmudgeon.

When I get home I will post the points system I came up with in my nerdy spare time. I ported over the F1 system and made some tweaks. Basically the top 25 finishers receive points with emphasis being placed on winning, the top 5, and the top 10. Basically there is a huge premium for 1st over 2nd, 5th over 6th, and 10th over 11th. The rest are kind of "thanks for playing." And if you finish below 25th you really don't deserve points.

Plus if you didn't pay points for the last 15 or so positions then you wouldn't have to deal with all these busted up cars coming out on track just so they could pick up a few extra points.

I still wish more emphasis was placed on winning, say . . . 6pts and 1-2 points for the pole.
I also wish most of the races were shortend by 100 miles or so (with expection of Daytona 500, Coca-Cola 600, and road races.)

Here's what I came up with a while back:
Pos. Pts.
1 250
2 200
3 175
4 160
5 150
6 140
7 130
8 120
9 110
10 100
11 90
12 85
13 80
14 75
15 70
16 65
17 60
18 55
19 50
20 45
21 40
22 35
23 30
24 25
25 20
26 15
27 10
28 5
Points paid only to the top 28 finishers. It's basically an F1-style system ported over to NASCAR. I like this because it helps prevent badly wrecked cars from putting around track trying to score an extra few points and I feel like it emphasizes winning, top 5 finishes, and top 10 finishes over just surviving and finishing somewhere outside of the top-10. It also gets rid of the bonus point system for leading a lap and leading the most laps. I think you could add a 5-10 point bonus for winning the pole to add some more excitement to the weekend.
Based on this system the top 3 points finishers from this year would have finished like this:
Jimmie Johnson - 2nd, 4430 points
Denny Hamlin - 3rd, 4250 points
Kevin Harvick - 4870 points
A select few races from last year:
1. Daytona 500
Harvick finishes 7th (130 pts), Hamlin 17th (60 pts), while Johnson finishes outside of the points in 35th (0 pts).
2. California
Johnson wins (250 pts), Harvick finishes 2nd (200 pts), while Hamlin struggles and finishes 29th (0 pts).
At this point in the season we have Harvick with 330 pts, Johnson with 250 pts, and Hamlin struggling with 60 pts but definitely not out of the fight.
Obviously it could be tweaked some more, but I think it's a good starting point.
And obviously the teams are going to adapt to a new point system, so last year wouldn't necessarily have ended that way. I ran some more models and found that the system was even more exciting if you gave the winner 300 points and second got 200. It made things VERY interesting but that's probably too much of a premium.

That's already happening now, though NASCAR does try to limit this practice.

i wouldnt mind seeing 3 races take the place of the one long one, like BTCC or DTM. Get points for winning, and that would make the 100 lap races really exciting
