Automatic GT500

As I'm sitting here watching the Mecum muscle car auction...
How come 40 years ago you could get an automatic GT500, but you can't today?

Neither is the Boss, Z06, or the now extinct Viper.

There is more emphasis on road racing for high performance now than 40 years ago when the quater mile track was more popular for the weekend racer.
