Well, my 2006 Tungsten GT just made its FIFTH trip to the dealership (only 2800 miles). This time it was for a rattle that sounded like it was coming from underneath the car somewhere. I'm not very mechanical, so after a quick look under the car, I decided to bring it to the dealership.
After keeping my car overnight, they finally diagnosed the rattle as a "bad transmission crossmember." Now like I said, I'm not mechanically inclined, so I don't even know what that is, but the dealership was in contact with some Ford Engineers who had discovered the same problem on several other Mustangs. To make a long story short, I was informed that there will be a "revised part" coming soon to replace the old one. Until then, I am stuck with a hose clamp in its place.

Just getting the info out there....

I may have this same problem. Just noticed it got worse with colder weather. I hear the rattling when the vehicle is idling at first startup and when going over bumpy surfaces. Sounds like it's coming from the transmission area (directly below shifter). Also, there is a bad vibration/resonance at around 1k and 3k RPMs through the shifter. The potential "transmission crossmember" problem you mentioned may be contributing to both. Let me know how things work out. When was your vehicle built?

my vehicle was built the first week the 06's were built...2nd week in August if I remember correctly.

Your problem definitely sounds like the one I had...the rattle sounding like it's under the shifter is exactly what I heard...the bumps, the 1K-3K rpms....exactly.

as soon as I get the revised part I will post again...I'll be sure to get back on how things work out.

I have the resonance at 3k, too. Dealer said they have nothing on it yet, so all of you be sure to take it in! The more people who report it, the quicker the fix. My dealer seems to think it is an exhaust resonance, but I've felt exhaust resonances and this just doesn't feel the same. It's gotta be an engine mount, tranny mount or harmonic balancer issue.

Keep us posted.

The Update:

Ford called me this morning and said they had the new part in, so I brought my car over. When I got there, I asked them "So, that revised part came in huh?" and they said "Well, we're not sure if it's the revised part or not....we won't be able to tell until we get the old one out."

Well, I thought that was weird, but I let them get to work anyhow. Now, I just got my car back and I asked "So was it the revised part?" and they said "Well, we couldn't tell just by looking at it, but the rattle went away...so, it probably is the new part, unless the rattle comes back, then we'll try ordering the part again."

Bottom line, the rattle is gone, and I'm not sure about the Ford Dealership....either you really can't tell by looking at it, or they have no idea what they are doing (either one possible). I would think, though, that the place they order the parts from could tell them if it was this new "revised" part. Oh well.

Sorry I wasn't more help to you guys!

I've heard that the crossmembers were installed upside down @ the factory. Which will support the sneaky approach.

Getting fed up with this rattling. I'm now driving around with the shifter cover and rubber boot removed (man, is that tranny loud :notnice: ). I want to pinpoint where the noise is coming from. It may be the passenger side heat shield over the cat. Waiting for a cold/rough startup when the noise is louder.

Did you guys ever figure out what this rattle was? I am now getting it ever since it starting getting cold. I only get it though when the car is cold. After driveing awhile it is okay. It occurs pretty bad when getting on it pretty hard in first and third gear.

I thought it was shifter related but now I'm not so sure.
