Thermostat Housing: Plastic vs Aluminum

Replacing engine in my 2005 V6 Mustang.

The newer engine has a brittle plastic thermostat housing, what I have read, the plastic does not last long and requires replacement.

My question, I know that some makers tend to use **** pore plastic when molding these housings, which company or brand is best as a replacement part....and should I stay with plastic or go with aluminum.

any insight and help on this subject please.

Be mindful, I am 16 years old, just starting to drive, and have zero knowledge about automotive maintenance or mechanics....my Dad is helping me restore my car, which I got three months ago for a birthday gift, so if I ask a bunch of dumb questions, please keep that in mind.

My dude do NOT replace it with another plastic one. Youll have nothing but issues with it down the line. The plastic ones tend to get too hot and warp, thus leaking coolant all over the place.

I recently changed my housing to a metal one this summer and if you do you will never have issues with it again.

I bought this one here:

If you want a cheaper one check this one out:

Dont worry about asking "dumb" questions. We all have to learn somewhere and at some point.
Im still learning myself!

Oh and happy belated bday. That is an AWESOME gift!! Congrats.

The only dumb question, is the one that never gets asked. Therefore don't ever feel embarrassed to ask for help or support, as that is the purpose of what these forums are designed for. That being said, welcome to TMS Also happy belated birthday.

Dorman Aluminum Thermostat Housing

Normally I wouldn't buy Dorman; however; this pic looks great so I have one coming to replace my leaky plastic one. Seems the plastic ones don't work so well on the S197 V6. Only weird thing is, it says it has a 120deg thermostat installed. Not sure if that is a typo. Anyone else have experience with this one? https://www.dormanproducts.com/p-131857-902-1997.aspx

WELCOME!

Every place I look says the same 120 Degrees ... perhaps an E-mail inquirey to Dorman is in order? Likely a misprint on them and every vendor repeated it?

Difference between cheaper and expensive part?

Hello!
I am new here and I’m glad to have found this thread. I noticed some leaking residue on top of my housing and I figured it must need a replacement. What is the difference between the cheaper one from Tom and the more expensive one from Simmons?

Coolant residue
