Rear axle whine - what if you don't fix it?

I have the 65-75 mph rear axle whine. At some point I will take it in for service. My question is - is it just an annoyance, or will not fixing it or waiting too long have some mechanical consequences?

I'm going to say it is more of an annoyance than anything else. I've had several GM cars, and a 1984 GT Mustang, make rear-end noises, and none failed. If the TSB I've seen is used to solve the problem, then the rear is almost 100% rebuilt in the process.

For those who have had the TSB work done, was it successful? Anyone had it done and it didn't work?

I had the TSB done on my rear axle whine. No whine anymore, although I've only driven about 1000 miles since I had it fixed. I hope it doesn't come back. It took about 2500 miles to show up after I bought the car.

I had it done about 1200 miles ago and it was not sucessful. In fact it was louder! It was a whine before, and now it is a howl.moan, especially when coasting from 70 to 55. It was there the very first time I got it up to 60 MPH after the TSB. Trying to get it back in the shop again, but I get busy and don't like having to give the car up for even a day. Since I know it is possible to get rid of, I'm not going to be happy until its gone.

So yours occurs when decelerating (foot off gas)? Mine occurs with foot ON the gas only, between 60 and 75. I wonder if these are different problems.

I had mind done, right after I got it. I think it showed up when my car hit 800miles, have not had it come back (currently has 5k on it)

The noise can occur on accelleration or decelleration and both are related to ring and pinion gear setup being out of spec.

Has anyone had the service guys upgrade the gears to 3.73 or 4.10 while doing the TSB work? Were they cool with that? Did they charge you for the labor?

To be more specific, in my case it occurs all the time between 55-70MPH, whether I'm accelerating, decelerating, cruising, but it is the most pronounced when I'm decelerating. Thoroughly irritating!

If I drove mainly street and never cracked 45 miles an hour, I would never hear it. But 90% of my driving is all highway right in the whine range. I hear it all the $#%(*^ time! I have turn my Alpine up to 12 to not hear it anymore. But at that volume I don't hear anything for awhile after I get out of the car.

For those that had the TSB work, did you guys do any special break in or baby it? I did the typical break in procedure, stopping every 1/2 hour for a cool down for the first 500 miles. But I had to push it above 60 MPH in those first 500 miles, though. Going 60 in a 75 MPH zone is suicide!

****... sorry to hear about that Chris.

I must say this is specifically why I did NOT get the extended warranty.

Warranty work from Ford is ALWAYS a hassle, at least in my experience, and you're usually lucky if they actually fix the problem instead of making it worse.

Ah don't feel bad, yet. I was able to get in touch with my service advisor again (only laziness on my part) and he said he will let me know the next time the Ford engineer is in town and we'll all go for a test drive together. I don' think you need to be an engineer to realize that it is way worse than it ever was before the TSB.

I did't get the extended warranty either.

I've had my 05 GT rear end rebuilt twice. It's now worse than ever. It whines when accelerating and decelerating, and seems to be getting louder.
I stopped by the dealer earlier this week and told them I would schedule an appointment - my request this time will be that Ford replaces the entire axle assembly. Not cheap, but they've already ahd two tries and haven't fixed the problem.

I got my 05 GT back Friday Sept 8. The dealer had the Ford engineer drive it. Service Rep told me they were considering installing an entire axle assembly, put they adjusted the pinion depth and the noise is gone. For now.
