Parking Brake (not freeze issue)

I pulled my parking brak handle up last night, just as I always do, but there was a pretty loud pop, and the handle is as free as if there's nothing attatched to it.
I pulled the console to see if the cable broke, or detatched from the handle, and it's all intact. I looked under the car the best I could without puting it up on jacks, and the cable is intact .... but I didn't look at the brakes/axle assemblies.... at that point, I figured I'd leave it in Ford's capable hands.
Anyone come across this before?

yeah... I need to find out if they'll gimme a loaner.. they haven't been so accomodating in the past, and because of that the issues have been mounting... I have the axle issues, the fule pump, and now this. The water leak showed up once... just long enough to make the cabin smell funky, and it hasn't come back... but the smell hasn't left. And every once in a while, the windows will go back up if I roll them down, or vice versa... like there's an electrical twitch somewhere. ... possibly due to the water leak.... but anyways... when I can get it into the dealer, I'll be sure to let y'all know what the root cause was.
