Metallic rattling under my car

I have an 05 GT premium manual with 20k miles with an irritating rattle. Right after starting the car and before it warms up, there is a very distinct metallic rattling sound. It only happens until the car is warm, at which point it stops. I first noticed this about 3-4 months ago, and with the recent cold-snap in Chicago the sound is much much louder now. On warm days the rattle is much less pronounced. Also, it seems to be coming from somewhere near the front part of the car, basically right under the shifter (but under the car). I have flowmaster axlebacks but the sound started before I put them on so I'm fairly positive that's not the source of the sound.

I'll end up bringing it in under warranty to check this out soon. Anyone with any ideas of what this could be? I don't know what the hell I'm doing, so even if I crawled under there I doubt I could tell where exactly the noise is coming from . Thanks in advance for any info you can give me before I take it in!

Check the bottom of the transmission bell housing. A lot of 05's were missing the bottom 2 bolts. Do a search, I'm sure the thread is still around here.

\/--- The flowmaster rattle wouldn't be near the front of the car.

That was my thread and is probably your issue. Ford left out the two lower bolts in the tranny bell housing (lower front) and dust shield will rattle like crazy until the car is warm....sounds just like an exhaust shield rattle and will drive you nuts! Get the bolts from your local Ford dealer and install and your noise should be gone

Although I've been under the car before, I can't remember what the cats look like. An older Stang that I've own had the same sound. It was caused by a weld that broke loose on the heat shield that was attached to the cats. Crawl under the car and hit the exhaust with a rubber hammer when it's cold. If it's the exhaust, you might be able to track "it" down. You already mentioned the it started before you installed the Flows, so it doesn't appear to be them which would have been my first suggestion...

I'm trying to reply to each of these threads since this rattle was so annoying and embarassing.

Unbolt the two lower fasteners. Put 1-2mm washers in between the plate and the bell housing. Rebolt and the noise should be gone.
