Just repalced my pinion oil seal

Well I saw the oil leaking on my driveway under the car. My 05 Mustangs has 60,000 miles one her so I had to do something. I thought the leak was the rear cover, I should have looked closer, the parts man at the Ford shop said it is usually the rear pinion oil seal, and it runs back under the cover. He was right. I had an estimate for the repair, well over $200, and I didn't have the money so I had to do it myself. I'm a mechanic, so I knew I could figure it out.
I had to purchase a Haynes service manual, and a few other odds and ends to make do with out special tools. The hardest part was to get the nut off that holds the drive coupling on the pinion shaft. It was on with lock tite and very hard to get off.

It took me two days to complete, with all my errands for parts and such, but it only cost me a bout $100 bucks and some labor.I changed the rear oil while I was at it. As I first thought it was just the rear cover leaking.

The parts guy tells me as he is witting my bill for 4 quarts of oil, this stuff is expensive, $18 dollars.I'm thinking $18 dollars for 4 quarts, HA! It was $18 a quart plus an lubricant additive, $80 total, Ouch!! That was the most of my money spent, the rest was just small odds and ends.Definitely an advanced job , not for the timid or non- mechanically inclined.

just had my rear trans pinion seal replaced under warranty, right around 59k miles. I'm glad I didn't have to do it.

I have 42K miles on my car and mine is leaking as well. I do almost everything on my car except body work, paint and a couple of other things. But I know I don't want to mess with the pinion seal. I got an estimate for $140 to replace the seal and will probably go that route.

I would have had some one else do it except the quote I got was for $200 and I didn't have that to spend.
