Fuel Injector Cleaning

Hey Everyone,

So I took my CS in for an oil change today and one of the techs came to me saying that I needed Fuel Injection Cleaning done on my vehicle. I found it very odd that he would say that since the car only has 41,000 miles, and also because when I asked him what this entailed, he said they would spray things into the motor to give me better fuel mileage.

I have never heard of this before so I told him to skip out on it. At $211, I really did not see the need for this. He said I could improve my MPG. I'm not the most technical guy in the world but when I think of MPG improvement, I'm thinking changing the fuel filter, replacing the air filter as needed, etc...

Have any of you ever gotten this? If so, did you notice any improvement?

Thanks!

Because the 4.6 3V doesn't have an effective PCV (its a straight tube), blow by from the crankcase does feed atomized oil/unspent fuel vapors directly into the intake. This bakes on your intake, butterflies, upper cylinder and pistons.

I'm guessing they wanted to do a Seafoam treatment - which you can do yourself. A quick job just adds some to the tank and would clean injectors, but a thorough job has you feeding some into the intake while running and supposedly removes carbon buildup inside the combustion chamber.

But in addition to that, a good oil separator is what many of us have done to keep the blow by out of the intake. It is said this can improve mileage, but its really about longevity of the engine.

This is the crap my separator collects - and the crankcase oil is new on the dipstick:

I forget if this pic I saved was at 13k or at 30k but your engine probably looks similar:

I checked my notes and that pic was from a 4.6 3V that had that much carbon on the butterflies at 15k!

So this type of service is something you would recommend done on our cars? I have heard of the Seafoam treatment and I wonder if that would help clean up some of the dirt inside of the intake. Just seemed a bit on the pricy side.

Thumbs up

Same thing happened to me at my oil change:

Dealer said I needed:
  1. Fuel Injection System Flush - $139.95
  2. Fuel Filter Replacement - $69.95
  3. Throttle Body Cleaning - I cannot remember how much they quoted as I did that myself.
I probably could have done all of it myslef but I was most comfortable with the TB so I let the dealer do the rest. I wonder if the $211 they quoted you included the Fuel Filter? If so then it seems competitive.

If the Fuel Injector Cleaning is just Sea Foam then it's definately not worth the $139.95 I paid for it.

Do a search for seafoam , there's been a lot of talk about it on the forum , here's a link to one of the threads ...
