Doing some data gathering on the S197 Fuel Fill (premature nozzle shutoff) problem. Ford has replaced my entire EVAP emissions system, and nozzle still shuts off at 1/2 tank (only fills driver's side saddle tank). Every now and then, if I flip nozzle between 2 and 3 o-clock position, it will fill all the way up.. but that is not the answer. Anyway, Ford has agreed to send out an Engineer to evaluate my car. I'd like to take back some data showing Ford this is not an isolated problem. Your input is greatly appreciated.

 

To the degree your having may not be that common ! my 06 very seldom as a problem filling, occasionally I have to fill slower after 3/4 tank. I have noticed at filling stations that have there pumps calibrated to fill at a faster rate is when I have issues.

 

You're FAR from alone. Here's a thread I posted on the issue a while back. Since I made the fix myself, I haven't had any problems, although who knows if they'll return.

You know I have heard of this problem before, however, I seem to have the opposite problem. I have an 06 and there is a local station that installed new pumps, if I fill up there at the highest speed I end up having overflow. I've had this happen at other stations as well. Gas will flow out from underneath the car and some will spill out from the nozzle and run down the side of my car.

 

That sounds like a pump problem, not a Mustang problem.

Heck if I'm putting gas in a 5 gallon jug the pump will shut off.

 

I have had slow fills and persistant stops, but have been easily able to cure that with inverting, turning the nozzle upside down.

Only once have I had to leave the station because of rediculously slow fill and that was not because of the car, it was the station.

I have zero problems filling the tank with the nozzle upside down. It seems to be dependant on the station, if one pump doesn't work normally chances are all won't. Same goes if the pumps Do work.

It's not really that much of an inconvieniance, atleast to me. Or rather it hasn't been bad enough to prompt me to go try and get it fixed. The skipper 500 is more a pain in the butt IMO, although I haven't gotten that looked at either.
