I recall reading about electronic / electrical problems encountered when replacing the original battery in an S197; such as the Shaker 500 won't play and your CDs are stuck inside. However, I have searched and cannot seem to find any threads on this. Did I dream about reading of these problems?

I have not had the problems with the original battery that some on TMS have encountered. However, my 2005 GT has about 21,000 miles and is about 44 months old, and I want to replace the battery before I get stranded somewhere, or worse, lock up the electronics of the car and have to deal with those types of problems, including screwing up the Shaker 500 with six CDs trapped inside.

Problems of that type sound ridiculous and incredible to me. But so do a lot of real problems experienced by myself and others. Disconnecting or replacing a battery should not trigger a bunch of issues.

What typically happens to the electronics of the car when you replace the battery? What precatuionary actions should be taken before disconnecting the batter to replace it?

Any insight is appreciated.

 

No problem here. When I changed my battery I didn't even lose my radio settings in the Shaker 500.

 

The worst case scenario is that you lose your keep alive memory settings but that should not disable your Shaker or PCM.

If you're still paranoid, you can hook up a battery maintainer using the cigarette lighter and swap batteries. The +12V from the maintainer will keep all the memory settings in place. Alternatively you can even use a 9V battery wired into the cigarette lighter (or any other live +12V access point) to keep your memory settings while you swap batteries.

 

You shouldn't have any problem. I had mine disconnected for 6hrs when I did the headers with no problems.

 

if you're worried about the cd's take them out first, you shouldnt have any problem with it, most all modifications require you to disconnect the battery, if you're still worried, have someone at the auto parts store do it, that way if they screw it up somehow, they are liable

 

I wouldn't worry about it. My battery crapped out early this year - stone cold dead with no warning. Replaced it with a Pep Boys special. No Shaker 1000 issues, no starting issues... nothing.
