Sold the 01 Cobra Vert Friday

I'm out of the Ford/Mustang business. It's kind of funny, I had to drive to a dealer east of Nashville summer 2007 to buy the car, the guy that bought the car is from Nashville.

It took awhile to sell, I just kept lowering the price to my payoff price as I made payments. I had two guys that wanted to buy it, but couldn't get the loan. I had a third guy in college that came with his father that was helping him buy it. He was ready to make an offer, then he got a quote on car insurance.

I plan on driving to West Virginia on Thursday with my Dad (he just wants to ride along) We are picking up a 1 way rental car, then leaving it in Charleson. It works out well my Dad wanted to ride along, the little town the car is in doesn't have a place to leave a 1 way rental.

I originally put the car for sale to buy an 03/04 Cobra vert. My mind changed when I drove my 928S4 for a week, then got back in the 01 Cobra. It just wasn't comfortable at all, the seats, the ride height, etc.

I was then set on an 93 RX7 with the LS1 vette engine swap, but it sold before I could sell the Cobra. There are other RX7's with the vette engine swap, but nothing I was as excited about, nothing close to this area to check out in person.

Then I considered a BMW 840/850 series car from the 90's. I couldn't find one here locally, I've never seen, felt, driven one. There was a nice one in Cleveleand TN and I was going to drive up to see it on a Friday, I called Thursday and found it had sold that Monday.

Next I considered a 1996-2002 Mercedes-Benz SL600. I test drove a 1999 SL500 last Saturday in Madison across from the Texaco/DQ. That particular vehicle has not been cared for, too many miles, and too much $$$. I liked the seating, looks, etc though and was really leaning towards the SL600.

I researched the SL600, MPG isn't great of course, parts are expensive, Advance auto wanted about $700 for a radiator for one, starter or alternator was around $300. I was still thinking it would be Ok, repairs would be expensive, but it's a reliable car.

The final nail in the coffin for the SL600 was when I received the insurance quote, it was over TWICE as much every 6 months as the 01 Cobra.

So, I had been watching this other car for a few months, I called talked to the owner, (he has it at a friends that is a dealer) I made an offer and as I said I'll pick it up next weekend.

So, you are thinking,...... WHAT is it????

1984 Porsche 928S, Triple Black, 5spd, 59k miles. Current owner has had it for 15 years. This is a EURO 928S, it's a Gray market car that was imported to the US sometime after it was 5 years old and there wasn't the strict laws to make it into a "US" car.

So, it has the 4.7 32v V8 310 Hp engine, instead of the US version's 234 Hp at the time. It has some other little differences, a Rear Fog light, headlights that can be aimed from inside the car, cornering/turn lights between the front tire and drivers door, the warning lights are in German, etc. Just some things that set it apart.

Since I already have one, I know I will like driving it, it's comfortable, etc. My current one has the rear wheels that are 18"x 11" wide and the tires only last 2,500 miles, so it's not practical as a daily driver.

I'll post pictures when I get back and the weather is nice enough for some photos with my two 928S sitting beside one another.

My current 928S4 is also a 5spd, Strosek Wide Body kit, 5.0 32v V8 rated at 316 Hp, it has full length headers, No cats, Dual exhaust, and is very loud!

Sounds like a fun car. Variety is the spice of life. I want a BMW for my next ride.

I suppose you know how expensive the 928 parts are.

Porsches are definitely my favorite German cars. They've always been in our family. and I plan on owning several in the near future. Honestly, I just prefer the 911 cars, and only recently the Cayman...

But I'm sure the 928 has benefits too. Is the Strosek that 1980s style flared kit with those...uh, Testarossa style vents? Almost like the Daytona fox body Mustangs?

Enjoy the new car!

Yeah, I did not know that was you in front of me that morning. I was digging the stance from the rear. And it sounds great!

That has to be a blast to drive.

Hey I was wondering where it went, I checked the autotrader link earlier and it said it was no longer listed. Glad you was able to sell it.

I don't know why you are so surprised about the SL600....after all it was only a $123K car when new!

I used to be a service writer for a Mercedes Dealership and we had a few of the S class V12's around both SL and SEL. The RH front strut for one at the time(probably more now) was $1600. Nice car but not cheap to own & maintain.
