Safety Inspection / Emissions / Tint Questions
I'm bringing my Mustang down to Huntsville this weekend and I was wondering what the registration requirements are for getting new plates. Do you have to take the car to a shop for a safety inspection, where they look for cats, check the brakes, etc? There's no emissions testing, right? What is the maximum tint you can have?

You're thinking of the Peoples Republic of California. This is Alabama. You only need to be able to tell them approximately how many miles are on your car.
Emissions? A car without cats is as sacred a right as the right to bear arms. :-)

Coming from Missouri, where they check for all the emissions stuff in the safety inspection. Emissions is now easy, as they just check to see that the computer thinks everything is ok.
Is tint a problem? I have 35% on the front two and 5% quarter windows and back window.

i have brought 3 vehicles from California and all 3 they requested to see personally to verify vin and odometer reading
2 were brought in march of 2006 were my vehicles in my name and tags were current.. and 1 i am fighting with them now my grandfather signed his name only using the middle initial instead of full name as stated in title, lets just say this is a pita

The titling and registration process for your vehicle takes place at the same time in Alabama, then you must renew your registration each year afterward.
A few counties mail out registration renewals, but the majority do not, so don’t count on that to remind you. With the staggered registration system, you’ll renew your car during the month assigned to the first initial of your last name.
Alabama does not require you to show proof of insurance when you register your vehicles, although minimum liability insurance is required in the state and you must sign an affidavit stating that you do carry insurance when making application for title. If law enforcement pulls you over in a traffic stop, you’ll be required to show proof of insurance at that point; if you don’t have it, you’ll be issued a ticket with a hefty fine and penalties involved.

Some Alabama counties now offer online renewals for vehicle registrations. Check to see if your county in on that list; if not, you’ll still need to renew your tags in person at your local tag office or by mail.

When you submit the affidavit to your local Motor Vehicle Title and Tag official, it won't hurt to bring additional proof, such as a receipt from the storage center, or, if applicable, a letter from your military unit confirming your vehicle was out of service. Be sure to also bring your vehicle's last registration certificate.
