Well, 307K miles and 26 years... 3 different engines. I figure it had a long life.
I remember reading that I can put on a mine hi-torque starter. Or, even one from a 93 which is supposed to be smaller and lighter. When I look at the 93, it has the solenoid on the starter. I take it that I would have to run a battery cable for a 93 from the battery to the starter (instead of the fender-mounted solenoid on my 84) and run the engagement wire down to the solenoid as well.
Anyone changed out one like this?

I had one on my racecar. Move your large starter cable to the constant side of the fender solenoid, and run a small wire from the switched side of the fender solenoid to the new starter solenoid.
Those starters don't require much power at all. I used a very small tractor battery in the racecar without issues.
