Need some suggestions please

Ok, I figured while my car is down getting the carb rebuilt, I should address a couple of issues I don't like. I'd like to get some opinions on the best way to go about it.

1.) The starter wire currently on the car is like a 12-14ga. wire. WAAy too small if you ask me. I'm trying to find out what size wire came stock so I can replace it. This one's all chewed up too. I want to reroute it to a better location than it currently is. It goes from the battery down under the oil pan and over the crossmember and into the starter. Currently it digs into the crossmember, leaving some nice cut places in the wiring. I'd like to get it out from under the car as it is.

2.) My fuel line comes from the mechanical pump, up the front of the motor, hovers above the driverside valve cover, wraps around behind the carb, and into my duel inlet on the passenger side, facing the firewall. Seems like an awfully long line. Any way to route it a shorter distance or to get it off of the valve cover?

1) Grrrr... I know the cable that you speak of. How about just getting a used one? I figure ~$10 should do it. Tim the Musttanguy will get one out to you at a perfect price.

2) You mounted the pump on the timing cover like the 83-85 motors? Why is the input at the carb pointed to the firewall? Can you turn it around?

Yea I might just do that. As for the fuel line, I have no clue why it's turned that way, but the guy rebuilding it said he is gonna try and move it over and turn it around. The way it turns though, it is out of the way. Just takes a really long line. It's an early 70's 351W so the fuel pump location is stock.
