Honey, I fixed it!
So, a knocking noise in the front of the engine popped up several weeks ago. Sounded like a rod. I took off the belt last weekend and it went away. Last weekend is when the heater hose blew. I had come to the conclusion that it must be the water pump. Although, I was not convinced.
So, I take a halfday yesterday and buy another water pump. Oh, look! They have water outlets for sale and mine has been in bad shape for a long time. I might as well do that, too. Oh, and new heater hoses and clamps. Yep.
So I tear down. And I am cleaning surfaces and replacing the heater hoses. A thought strikes me. I grab the crank pulley. It's loose. Ummmm.... Found my knock.
I run up to the only parts store in Ardmore because the bypass hose is not looking its best. As I am sliding the lower rad hose onto the water pump, I notice it twists easily at the radiator outlet. Oh no.
Sure enough, I get everything warming up and it is leaking something fierce. Okay, let's go back to the only auto parts in Ardmore. Nope, they have no radiator.
Back home, look online, Advance has one that is ten miles away. It's 5 and the sun is going down and it is cooling off. Dangit. There and back and it is 6. Quick R&R, then pour fluid in again for the umpteenth time.
Done at seven, only three drops of blood sacrificed to the motor gods.
Dangit, A/C is not kicking on. No defog for the windows. Next!

Okay, I didn't fix it. When I was placing the thermostat gasket on the new water outlet from Advance (http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web...S_524476777___), the bypass placement was farther to the outside than it should have been. I was worried about that part. Sure enough, it is leaking. Woody has none (discontinued). I guess I put my old one back on. Even if it is in terrible shape, it fit correctly and sealed.

It sure is pretty.
I see a couple of issues:
1) The hex-head caps that they use. Gonna be really hard to get in the lower one becaue of the timing cover. As it is, I have to remove the vacuum diaphragm of my distributor to get a wrench on the stocker.
2) It's $100!
I ended up cleaning my old one and putting it back on. Cost me nothing and it is sealed.

Thanks, Alex. I will try.
Most of the time I am needing the part RIGHT NOW.
That part is sold under factory Aire and Murray with part number 84884. If you get a moment, pull one from stock. Then place the gasket (in the box) to it and look at how the bypass hole is offset to the outside. I would love to take the jerk that did that and have him R&R my housing.
O'Reilly does have a Motorcraft piece that they can order... to the tune of $120.

O'Reilly's target market is anyone who shops at Autozone or Advance. Shop local when possible. O'Reilly is just another big fish in the pond. Parts Warehouse has always been a good choice. It probably won't work for the "young" guys as there is no place or time to stand around and BS with the top notch parts guys as they are busy and it is a "warehouse" not a chrome showroom. NAPA is also usually less than the box stores and most of them are locally owned.
