There is about a 1" rib cast onto the block on the taller 351M/400 which runs along side the distributor going from the front of the block extension back to the intake manifold.
M-block engines have the taller intake manifold front mating surface (almost an inch above the distributor mounting hole and front cover housing) and is quite apparent.

what year you looking at .. 69 would be windsor only unless nonstock -- 70 could be windsor or cleveland .. 71 could be all three if someone took out a 429 and put in the boat anchor 351/400 M. . google up an image of all three .. the 351 windsor is just a wider and taller 302 .. the 351C is much smaller than the 351/400M ..the 351M will ( not) be a factory 4 barrell .. .. if it still has the sticker on the valve cover it will tell you ..one could go on forever ..
well i wikipedia all of that kinda stuff and it didnt have any pics that helped, so just look for the 1" rib by the distributor if it a boat anchor.

I would doubt very seriously that someone would put a 351M in a Mustang. Sure, you could put the new aluminum 351C heads on one and make hp, but why bother? They were mostly smog engines from the mid-70's on so not really worth much. Probably $50-$100 at a junkyard.
so is a windsor or a cleveland a better motor, I've heard the cleveland is, and i've heard the Windsor is. My lack o knowledge and experience would lead me to say the Cleveland is a better one to have, but the W will have more options.

One the other hand, some 351C engines were 4 bolt main blocks and very valuable. They were only factory installed from 1970-1974 (in the US). After market parts are quite common (NASCAR Ford engines are still based loosely off of this engine). The aftermarket for 351W is enormous and would prolly be your best find.
Using the new Dart or World Products blocks, 351W based engines can now be bored/stroked up to 454 cubic inches and well over 1000 hp naturally aspirated. Check out Keith Craft Engines for some of his Windsor based crate engines:

price is not firm around 1k, i drove it, but he didnt have time for me to piddle around with it look at everything. this is the second time he told me its a cleveland, but i didnt check he had to be at work by 5 and i got to his place at 430 so really didnt have that much time.
I've heard that the best combo is a Clevor. Cleveland blocks, with Windsor heads. Heard something about the Cleveland heads dont flow well, but the blocks are more stout. I dunno. Mine's all Windsor. But its holding up nicely.
