Thumbs down Can color add or detract from a car’s value?

from a Road and Track article that I stumbled across on Yahoo

Can color add or detract from a car’s value?
The simple answer is yes, especially if you plan on holding onto your car long enough for it to attain classic status. “Everybody talks about Resale Red,” says Mike Fairbairn, a founding partner at RM Auctions Inc. Red is perennially popular with buyers but, according to Fairbairn, not all colors are so lucky.

“The other conventional wisdom is that you can’t sell green.” (the horror)

Fairbairn advises owners—specifically those in the classic car world—to think carefully when choosing a color. “Choose a period color that people would consider iconic for that model.” A color should also apply to the type of car, with darker hues working well with formal luxury vehicles like a vintage Rolls-Royce.
now they tell me!

But who buys a car for how well it sells later?

But if someone's buying a BULLIT, they want the green.

Because its period correct.

“Choose a period color that people would consider iconic for that model.”

EDIT: Funny, I know a number of people that avoid red because of the long term fade factor.

Red is perennially popular with buyers but, according to Fairbairn, not all colors are so lucky.

Yes, absolutely. It's really more of a fleet concern, when you're buying 100 or 500 of the same type of car.

Think of some of the hideous greens you've seen on cars, especially from the '70s. That's what they're talking about. A Bullitt Mustang is supposed to be green, so it's not a factor on that car at all.

True, but dark green/British Green was pretty prevalent across lines. My family had several dark green Pontiacs back then.

Our green Bullitts are the exception to Road and Track rule. Interesting find and it's a good topic starter, but I'm not worried at all...........mostly because I never plan on selling.
